Spent a day on the HTPAA stand at the Kyneton "Lost Trades Fair". Fabulous. No wonder it's gone from strength to strength since it started about three years ago. As I left on Saturday afternoon the gate guy told me they had registered 7500 people and were expecting similar numbers today. Apparently this is up on the 10,000 people over the same two days last year. Anyway a fascinating turn out. Can highly recommend it to anyone for next year. Wonderful.

Just finished a very busy "Toolie" weekend. Fabulous. Had the HTPAA bi-annual conference followed by the members tool sale on the Saturday (8am to 830pm) and the public tool sale on Sunday morning. Loved it, but I sure had no trouble crawling into bed back at the farm on Sunday night. The conference went well but I always think its too short given the width of the subject matter. Got to think there's more potential there. My presentation on how I wrote the Titan book seemed to go OK (got a couple of head swelling compliments! but hey, it don't take much these days to make me smile!) . This led to a heap of interest and an unexpected spike in sales (I've sold half the books now in about a month). The other speakers were great although until my talk was over I was kind of focussed on me (nervous). The tool sale on both Saturday evening and Sunday was its usual fabulous self with a huge crowd turning up on the Sunday. I guess I get more of a kick out of chatting to folk about tools than selling them. I've become the "Titan go to guy" (Is this good??) Anyway I'm making a virtue out of my narrowness. A one trick pony but its apparently a good trick for now.

Well, the latest guff on the Titan book is: Six weeks out from publication and 60% of the books are gone. The reviews will be out (in various publications) over April/May so that's the next nail biter. The HTPAA conference paper on writing and publishing the book went well and apparently it will be put up on the HTPAA facebook site (along with the other speakers) at some stage. I've been asked to speak on the same subject at other seminars as well, later in the year. The whole thing so far has been a real surprise and if I'm honest, a huge relief as well. So far the few people who have come back with comments have been pleased but I'm waiting for the heavy duty independant reviews before I get too complacent. If the remaining 40% sell reasonably quickly I'll have to start thinking of a second printing. Her indoors will love to hear that. Oh, I've started some preliminary thinking on the next book too (subject undisclosable at this juncture) but I'm taking a month off as of Monday and going to India. I'll take some images of any interesting woodwork I come across.

Well. back from Rajistan with a heap of woodwork images from various Mogul/Hindu palaces and forts which I will post later. Mostly windows and doors.that have survived.
Big news is I'm speaking at a writing festival about
"THE BOOK". Well possibly a ‘mini-festival’ would be more accurate.however, on June 4, courtesy of Carbatec who are sponsoring and hosting the event, It will be a half day program of talks and discussion by and for those who enjoy words on wood and tools.
This is a free to attend event which will be held at the Brisbane retail outlet of Carbatec, 128 Ingleston Rd, Wakerley, 4154. Start time is 9am, and you will need to RSVP to [email protected] Refreshments will be available. Read more at Wood Review Writers Festival - Australian Wood Review.

Absolutely wonderful thing happened to me yesterday. I received (wait for it) a hand written letter, IN THE MAIL. Yes, snail mail. Unlined paper, copperplate script, headed and footed according to Hoyle. The old way. How's that? I have not received a letter that is not a typed invoice demanding money for many decades. The letter was from a person who had bought the book and was thanking me. He also sent some old (photo copied) catalogue material that he thought I might find useful. How thoughtful and kind is that. I was completely touched and humbled by it and will have to answer it in kind. Conversely I haven't written a letter that is untyped or sent electronically in decades either. I'll have to badger my memory back to Miss Hawkyard in grade six at West Heidelberg Primary school in the late fifties to remember how to do it. Amazing, people still write (longhand) letters. I'd forgotten how good it feels to receive one and be reminded of how considerate people are. I guess you are not the only saint on the block Wilkster

Well, off to Brisbane on Friday for the woodworking writers do on Saturday morning at Carbatec. I'm not NERVOUS. Really!! Eventhough the other speakers are about ten times more professional than me. I DON'T CARE!! It'll be good. I'll be good. Yes.

Only twenty or so copies of the Titan tome left to sell and I can move back into the master bedroom which will be great because the dog is getting sick of me and its cold outside. No. I exaggerate of course. Its not that cold yet. The review in the HTPAA magazine "Tool Chest" was great and led to a few more phone calls.

I hope the presentation went well.
The book gets a nice review from Bob Howard in the latest AWR.

Well, two or rather four things happened yesterday morning which are notable. Yes, the writers presentation in brisbane went well although I felt a bit presumptuous talking in the presence of the "real" (do it for money) writers who also spoke. Secondly, I read Bob Howards review in the AWR moments before I was on and and I'm deeply thankful to him. Thirdly THE RAIN. It came down for hours in buckets. We could sure use some at the farm. And finally, I met and had a chat to Ian Wilkie at last. Fifth, I met the Nathans (Linda and Raf) who have been so kind to me. How's that? Big day for a country lad.

Apart from some trailing reviews in other wood work mags and a couple more speaking engagements the big (and amazing and exciting and unexpected) flurry after publication has died down and I can return to normal life. Most of the books have gone and I've moved back into the main house with the family. This looks good on the surface but underneath another stay in the barn is in the offering as a second addition is rearing its head and I haven't discussed this with my housekeeper as yet. Danger lurks here so I'm keeping dark in the short term (at least over the cold winter months). A second edition means a bit more work to add in new thoughts and extra new information that has come to light plus any corrections edit wise that have revealed themselves although in total this probably won't amount to much. The downside of course is how many more sales will the market take given the narrowness of the subject and the impact of my obsessions.

Anyway its been a hell of a ride. Thanks to all those who bought one. I'm hoping for some constructive comments to add to the "Prospective second addition alterations" list.

    Doggie

I had missed this thread about your book, although as you know, I recently became aware of it. In my defense it is in part attributable to the way I view the Forums. I understand your reference to "narrow focus."

A glance at the pix you have posted in this thread leads me to believe it is a very professional presentation at a high aesthetic level. Excellent work. Your self-deprecating style leads me to believe your background to this publication was based on drenching cattle or ploughing a paddock in preparation for rain that probably won't eventuate.

Did you have help with the layouts and other publishing requirements? In any event it is a very creditable effort. When the second edition comes out I will have to put my hand up for a copy unless there are still copies available from the first run.

I suppose the prospect of a second print run is dependent on demand. Titan chisels are the woodworking equivalent to the Holden car, but how well known are they outside of Australia bearing in mind three quarters of the world don't know where Australia is and at least one POTUS (ex) thinks it is next to Germany?

Whatever you decide I wish you all the best with it.

So. The books are all but gone and the second edition is still lurking in the background due to incomplete negotiations with U know who!! I've been collecting comments from the various reviews and have read through the text and re checked the images re possible changes IF a 2nd Ed. should be given a green light by management. Given the narrowness of the subject I'm amazed they have sold so quickly. A couple of reasons for it I think are the reviews that have come about (especially Linda Nathan's support in the AWR) and my fellow HTPAA (and TTG) collectors who have been very encouraging. Anyway things are back to normal and I've commenced research for a another collector book (subject of which is under wraps at this time). In regards to the remaining books I'll put the stragglers up on ebay and there will be a few to sell at the next HTPAA tool sale.
