Titan skew Gouges??
A mate of mine has this pair of Titan skew gouges... He seems to think that they are factory made by the grind marks... but I can't find any evidence that Titan ever made a skew version of the their gouges. From Dick's awesome book, I would say they are from the early 60's. Most tools that he received from an old tool box were in an unused state with some still having swing tags on them.
Here are some pics.

Any thoughts on these would be much appreciated

I have seen no documented evidence of Titan turning chisels although there are examples every now and then of user modifications to adapt them for wood turning (mostly skew grinding). There is evidence they did not make them though (at least in the early fifties) from a Tariff Commission hearing where the Titan manager told the Commission that they did not make turning or carving chisels as the market was too small. BUT, Titan's advertisements state they would make special order chisels if you wanted enough of them.

Thanks Doggie......the angle of the grind looks more like a turning chisel although even then I can’t see where it would cut..except maybe the very tip of the pointy bit.... I can’t say that I have ever seen a skewed gouge of any sort let alone a turning chisel...not that I am a wood turner...but I just don’t see the need for a skewed turning gouge....love to know why you would want one. As I said earlier these tools are coming from a tool box that has produced unused or lightly used tools from the Newcastle area. And am wondering if these a relic from the manufacturing days of that area.

There are quite a few old tools turn up with modifications that have you scratching you'r head. Was a chisel with a right angled handle on here a few weeks back. Sometimes the reason remains the secret of the person who did the mod. I have reground a few turning tools to fit particular tasks but I cant see how those gouges would be used. Those handles are not turning chisel handles either.

Thanks John....totally agree...can’t see how these chisels could have been used..certainly wouldn’t have been used for turning a good chunk of Aussie hardwood my mate swears they are an original grind but I have my doubts... the only other thing I thought of is that they may have been used as a scraper action than a pairing action..

I think you have a left and right pair of wood carving gouges.
Meant for going into confined concave spaces in deep relief or sculptural carving.
If that's the case, the total included bevel angle might be 20-25 degrees.
I have a couple of jobs on a pair of story poles where I could use those instead of a crooked knife.

These chisel belong to a friend so can’t measure them but the look as though the grind is a much steeper angle than what would be required by a carving chisel...originally when they were described to me I thought carving chisel... he currently giving them a clean and send me some updated photos which may shed some light onto their use.
