Electromagnetic clocks
Hello everyone
I want to build a clock with wooden gears. Most of the clocks I have seen have a pendulum weight like Clayton Boyers.
I am not confident that my grandkids would be able to leave the bob alone. (Nor the adults for that matter!!)
I have seen an electromagnet clock on the internet which had the clock gears showing and a small pendulum attached....[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JATRFEMiRZ4]YouTube - Electromagnetic Clock[/ame]
Does anyone know of any plans for this type of clock.

jpb1958, if you follow the link just under the YouTube video you'll find that the company that makes these clocks provides detailed plans, in PDF format, for free!
See here.
Think I might download myself a copy.
Scott.

This clock looks like a great project. I have looked at the plans but I need some info on the electonics side of things. Is there an electromagnetic 'kit' that I can use?..Or do I need to build one myself. I went to Maplins and they were not much help.

Hi Scott
Yeah, I found the site too, but at the bottom of the page it says they are not making the controller and if I send an email they will notify if it becomes available.

I e-mailed them and received this reply..
"I could sell you the board, battery holder, coil and magnet for £65 including post/packing if your in the UK".
I haven't got the funds at the moment so this isn't an option yet.

Hi, I'm also building my first clock - the Horologium clock by Clayton Bowyer. My reason for choosing it is that has so few parts and can be easily adapted.
In your case, you could pivot the Verge on the intermediate wheel and thus not have something too tempting for the grandchildren. You can see what I mean on the last image on the Flickr page for the clock (Horologium by Pierre Sallin | Flickr - Photo Sharing!)
If it interests you, I am starting a diary about my attempt as it helps me be a bit more methodical and may help other beginners - I've posted my initial pages at
The Horologium Clock
Good luck in what ever you decide
Chris

Hi Chris
Great site you got there bud...loved the graphics. Some (most) of the maths passed me by, but I guess that's because I need to sit down and study properly.
Cant wait for you to get started.
I couldn't really see the pendulum on the intermediate wheel nor do I know how I would set one up.
I have not made a clock yet so no surprise that I don't know these things yet, so I can see lots of reading ahead of me, but your site is on my 'must read regularly' list..

The web site Instructables has all sort of things to make, including a wooden Gear Clock (Wooden Gear Clock)
Dragonfly
No-one suspects the dragonfly!
