    Default Help making clock

    Hello everybody.

I am going to try and make a giant wall clock. It has to be battery powered. I know nothing about clock making so I have questions that I hope this forum can help me with. The clock will look something like this

eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d

I will make the hands and numbers from wood and paint them glossy black or dark grey. The minutes hand will be 50-60cm long from centre and the numbers will be placed ~65cm from centre so the total diameter of my clock will be ~130cm.

First thing I will need is a clock motor to power the hands. Is there a motor strong enough to power wooden hands this long. Also, how will i attach the wooden hands to the motor.

I know nothing about clock making either that looks quite challenging but great. I'm sure someone on here will be able to offer some advice.

    G'day Y'all
When you make the hands, extend the build away from the pointy end by a third of the length.Widen the extension up a little and glue a metal weight to the under side. Keep adding weight until it balances on the pivot.
That way you do not need such a high torque motor because once it has started it has momentum and will tend to keep moving. The big amp draw will be when it starts up.
If it is balanced then the motor does not have to lift the heavy part against gravity every time it goes around.

jredburn, Joe, thanks for that. I have oftened wondered how that worked, especially when I have thought about making a clock for my barber, with a pair of scissors for hands. That was my main concern, and the next is, including other baber type paraphanalia into such a clock.

I'm not aware of a clock mechanism that will handle the weight of such large wooden hands. Thin Aluminium sheet cut with tin snips would be more suitable.

    Hi,

High Torque battery movements are available, but nothing will drive the timber hands without them being balaced as previously mentioned. No real need to extend the tail of the hands as far as a third I wouldn't think, plus at that length they may look ungainly. These movements are designed to drive hands of a similar length, but made of thin aluminium. The other problem may stopping the movement wanting to tilt when the hands are on one side, although the counter weights may help this. I think a bit of trial and error might be one the cards.Hope this helps.(I'm a watch/clockmaker by trade).
