    Default My students work.

People, here are some pictures of my year 9 clock design projects. The students are given a piece do mdf , a mechanism and a selection of veneers and their goal is to produce a clock. The rise aspect of the challenge is to sketch some ideas and then refine those ideas until a final design is reached. Next is the written construction procedure on how they will construct the clock, finally they make it.
These students are 14 years old with a limited workshop and only hand tool usage.

I hope you enjoy these pictures and I am looking forward to some groovy feedback.

    Regards Damien.

They're great, Damien, I'm always amazed how you give a group the same brief and they all come up with completely different ideas.

My favourite is the cylinder with the flamey top, although it has a distinct advantage over the others.

Thanks Peter, Some of the ideas were mind blowing and very complex. I had to curve their enthusiasm as I explained that the students still had to make them. I have done this project for 2 years now and have found that the students really enjoy it. So much that I had a majority of the class in the workshop before school and at lunchtimes. I had to yell and scream to get them out!
The clocks are polished with different grade of shellac depending on the veneer they chose.

Great stuff, Damien. I also like the first one, but its good to see all of them and the variety they bring to the brief.

I love the difference ideas it just goes to show how different we all are. I wonder if they were asked to make another clock would they come up with similar designs to the ones produced or something different.

I would not be surprised if some were inspired by some of the designs.
