Default BETH "YuanFen" May 13 (Friday) 2011 - launch for new season

    Hi Boatmik and All,

Against all prejudices and superstitions I've splashed my sailing canoe BETH "Yuanfen" on Jezioro Dziekanowskie (tiny lake near my house) this day (May 13 Friday).

Forecast wind Force up to 5 gusted irregulary but it increased to Force 6-7 later (white caps on tiny lake!)

Initially it seemed to me that the wind is weakening

    but stronger gusts came shortly

until I decided to take a second ref on the main sail - dropped it and sailed under mizzen only to the shore

We changed at helm... When the second ref was taken, the wind increased and continued increasing ... that my friend capsized and he had a difficulties to return the right position... I have no video - the camera memory card was already full.

Few photos from earlier minutes when wind was worse and me at helm:

Congrats, looking great! It's been a good week with two Storer boats launched. The capsize must have been refreshing, your water is a LOT colder than mine .

    Hi Simon,
My friend who capsized was afraid of hypothermia (two weeks circa ago was a tragic accident in Poland - cabin boat capsized and two people drowned due to hypothermia) and he was positively surprised, because the water in our lake is already quite warm - arguably due to the heat of the last few days. I waded to the knee only - I was warm.

    About capsizing:
It was due to his inadequate techniques of sailing. Tack did not go due to the low speed of boat. The bow was driven with the wind up to the beam reach (Force 5 wind up to the perpendicular to the port side) and improperly hiked sailing canoe BETH capsized quickly.

The attempts to return to the right position:
BETH was quickly reintroduced to the right position but an attempt to return to the cockpit ended up tipping the mast to the bottom (upside down). Several subsequent trials ended in a similar way, so I advised drifts to the near shore. There (water for half of the thigh) we managed to turn the canoe into position, bail out, and pull ashore.
I'm going to check these procedures by myself - but I prefer to wait for warmer days even

    About my BETH's details:
    1. Water gets into the compartment of mast step and partner - it is difficult to get rid of.
    2. "Watertight" closure of the luggage are quite leaky - expensive and useless.
    3. A few liters of water leaked into the flotation chambers - by "watertight" inspection hatches probably - before the long trip will be worth it to fill the chambers by flotation material ...
    Aloha!
