    Default Three Billy Goats Gruff!

    It has finally happened!

This past week, at the Small Reach Regatta in Maine, USA, we had 3, yes THREE, Goat Island Skiffs sailing together. In close formation, no less. (I graciously slowed my boat to allow Christophe and Clint to keep up while pictures were taken. ) Two different photographers caught the action as we screamed up Frenchman Bay with the wind on our port quarter. Unfortunately, both photogs are notorious for being slow uploaders, so we might not be able to see those pics for some time yet. But in the meantime, you can gaze at the ones my wife shot of us with her cell phone.

Nice! I Wish I would have a GIS too...

Are you the one with mizzen? Is really a mizzen helping that much that the other two are having hard time to keep up with you? Or was it more meant as a joke? With pure texts it is not really clear.

No, Paulie is in the center with the stunning black hull. So if he was truly running away from the other boats, it was clearly because of the paint color.

For video of CCBB's yawl "Bleat" (the two-masted one) and Callsign222's "I Am Zinea, Pterodactylus", please see YouTube:[/b]

You will see that both blow past the videographer's boat like it was standing still (sort of...).

Nice!!! Good to see 3 together. Up a notch in comparison to 2 Goats meeting up which has happened a few times now.

But.... is there also evidence of the 3 sailing together than just lying about on the beach / trailers (i.e. not just showboating)!

Boats are looking great, each being very nicely finished with different touches (mizzen, painted interior, black hull, birdsmouth masts versus square masts, etc.). Each one however a true GIS!

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING weekend! Three Goats, great winds, great weather, great times. My boat and I have finally fused into a sailing machine. I love my Goat. My Goat loves me. We killed it! Lengthy SRR blog post coming up!

There is no such thing as lounging around landside and showboating at the SRR. You are either sailing, or you are dead. As Paulie mentioned:

In all seriousness, I have to give props to both of my co-captains for being better sailors than I am.

Coming up the bay on day 3, my boat was noticeably less stable than the other two. CCBB and callsign222 both had their boats up on the chine and were slicing along through the waves. I had my boat flatter and was getting bounced around. Eventually, a wave caught me on the port quarter and I came within a hair's breadth of rolling it over, first to windward, then to leeward. The other two boats were not affected and had gone by me by the time I recovered.

Two days earlier, we took off in a gale after lunch. Like most of the boats that afternoon, I was fully reefed, with just a postage stamp's worth of canvas up. callsign222 had no reefs and had a completely inexperienced crew on board. I surely would have lost control in that situation. But callsign222 has mad skillz.

Obviously, I have a lot of learning to do, on basic boat handling as well as on the peculiarities of the GIS. Luckily for me, both of my co-captains are also gracious teachers and were happy to share tips and knowledge later, around the campfire. That was probably the best and most productive aspect of the weekend. Thanks to both!

PFFF whatever Paul! Coming back from Bean Island Clint and I just couldn't catch up to you, and we were trying like balls! We were all well matched. I had a great time hanging out you two have a super sense of humor, come back next year to HOG!

What I find most interesting is that upwind the yawl and the trad rig are neck and neck. Clint and I were literally at each others throats and neither of us could gain an inch on each other-- dead spot on same speed. I was alone and had less weight but had more heel going on, Clint was flatter but with a crewmember so more weight, it was an even cancellation.

Clint and I had these giant big open-mouthed grins on our faces, you couldn't slap the smile off of us if you wanted to! What a great weekend!

Fantastic!! PLEASE pass on my thanks to Jonathan, first for circling back to take these, and second for posting so quickly.

If you look carefully through the set, you can see that he caught our near spill. There is one shot where we are clearly off track, rolling to windward, while BLEAT and IAZP roar past us. It just needs a speech bubble over our boat saying, "Dang!"
