Thread: Bruynzeel Marine Ply

Worth a check and also to ask where the ply is coming from.

The office called "bruynzeel" has been there since I was a kid and they definitely had the ply by the same name. They started to sell cheaper and usually crappy ply like everyone else in Australia a few years ago.

In some periods they didn't sell plywood at all, but that might be a false memory of mine.

I would ask the right questions. Be nice if they are bringing it in.

This is the good stuff MIK, made in Europe. Has the Lloyds Certification as to the BS1088 and has a 10 year structural guarantee.

Just looked at the website.

There is one major discrepancy. Most (All?) European sources of Gaboon produce 2500 x 1220 mm sheets. That is longer than 8ft x 4ft.

I would be expecting the real Bruynzeel to be the bigger sheet.

yes, it is 2500 x 1220 according the Denman web site.

I might have been looking in the wrong place on the Bruynzeel australia website, but could only see 2440 x 1220.

This takes me back... My old man used to work for Bruynzeel back in the 60s here in the UK.
Top 8 x 4 sheet on the pallet was often damaged by the strapping and was 'scrapped'.
He made shelving and other stuff from these, one I still have in the workshop. Really quality material.

Yes, Bruynzeel was synonymous with lightweight Okoume/Gaboon ply boat building 50 and more years ago. My dad and I used it to build a number of boats in the late 60s in South Africa where they actually had a factory for a while. Good to see the brand is back with the genuine quality stuff.

This page on the Denman Marine website gives the info on the Bruynzeel gaboon fairly succinctly - and seems to state that Denman are getting the stuff exclusively from Bruynzeel in Oz. I may be totally wrong about this as I am not feeling my best at the moment. Having said that, however, I was going to mention exactly this to woodeneye when I was up at Lake Macquarie for the "classic wooden boat show", by I got distracted and didn't get back to the topic. I have, of course, got my own nefarious reasons for keeping an eye on Andrew's supply and pricing ;).

That makes sense: I can't see Bruynzeel double-handling the gaboon by off-loading at Pt Botany then transferring to Hobart by sea (again) or road (via the ferry). It would have been good if Denman's had been able to sort out a handler here in Sydney as they were in the process of doing, but I guess that the double-handling problem cut in again. Especially for such a tiny market such as Sydney, where people are too busy these days to even scratch themselves...

Either that or it's just an error by Mavis. I'll give them and Andrew a call on Monday. Andrew may have a drop shipping arrangement.

The Gaboon ply from Bruynzeel in Sydney is Nicma brand, made in Asia. They say it has BS 1080 certification but This is questionable.

On the other hand, the Bruynzeel Gaboon ply from Denman Marine is made in Europe to BS1088, and comes with a Lloyds certification. Denman has sourced their ply independently.

When I bought my 6mm Okume/Gaboon (Joubert) 5ply from Denmans it came sandwiched between two sheets of 2500X1200 3ply for protection. It looks like 4 or 5mm. I've kept it but it's just sitting there begging for something to be done with it, but what? Is it good for anything? It looks OK on the outside, although it's a bit scratched up as I used it on the rough garage floor as protection when building the Goat.

Any suggestions?

Put it towards the MS-12?
