Well I am proud to announce the successful launch of Orel, which means Eagle in Slovene. Before I get to some launch details, let me run the rudderbox setup question past you all...

Firstly, is this a suitably reinforced rudderbox? I believe the bolt through the top of the rudder and rudder box is the main concern here. I also have one at the bottom. The pin and gudgeon setup is copied from Peter's work.

Everything packed and ready to roll:

Well there was a lot of speculation about the weather on Saturday. Fortunately we woke up to clear skies. At Velenjsko jezero the sun was out with a nice breeze.

We were joined by Peter (Koala in this thread) with his family, who was a very helpful guide through my building process. Do I mention we started building our OzRacers in Nov 2008? After getting the boat rigged, Peter provided us with a small bottle of champs to celebrate the occasion...

Peter then provided me with some muscles to avoid the iron bars imbedded into the slipway...

The sail was raised and I took off for a lovely ride back and forth across the lake...

The rest of the day was spent taking various members of the family out for a sail. Unfortunately the wind died for an hour after lunch, yet came good again in the later afternoon.

Overall I am very pleased with the results. Of course I know every place where the paint is chipped or I didn't clean up the epoxy properly, or whatever. Yet the build was very satisfying (even though it took some time). As far as sailing Orel goes, I am still figuring out the best position to sit in different conditions. The rudder is seriously too long. I was struggling to manoeuvre around it at times. I eventually just had to take off the rudder extension as it too was in the way. I suspect I need stronger winds to take better advantage of these things.

The only other condition worth mentioning is the difficulty I had landing the boat. The lake has the usual covering of pebbles, so in order not to scrape the paint off the bottom, I found I had to jump out the side of the boat while trying to turn the front into the wind. No doubt I'll get more practise in that over the remaining months of summer/autumn.

So thanks for a good design and plans Mik. I'm already thinking about that GIS (but not just yet committing myself to a new build). Thanks Peter for your aid in understanding the build and resourcing materials. Thanks should also go to my father-in-law Phillip for his help and enthusiasm to build the boat when he came to stay with us. And thanks to my wife and family for their on-going support. Its great when my youngest son said yesterday that he wanted to spend his birthday (3 y.o. today) sailing in the boat!

Congratulations! Well done! Nice, spiffy paint job - especially with the undercoat problems that you had - too :).

You must be very pleased and proud. She looks lovely in her element, and a lovely name as well.

    Rudder is gorgeous!

    Great work!

    Alex.

Absolutely beautifull Theodor.Your patience has created a really nice boat. I think if I'd had to wait that long to do a build I would have been chewing pieces off the furniture.

My wife wants me to paint our hull dark blue so you've given us an insight as to how it will look.

    Well done mate.

    Cheers, Kev.

Thanks for your kind words everyone.I do believe I missed or could not find the answer to one question in Mik's plans: how do you find time to take your new boat out for a sail?
