bulkheadaches! Novice working on a Beth
I'm working on a Beth, about to start attaching things to other things and running into brain freeze. Two questions before I commit a faux pas...anyone have any guidance?
All bulkheads and knees have an additional 60mm at top allowing -I assume- for the deck camber. To use the deck camber template, I line up the centerline on the template with the one on the bulkhead, and adjust the height until the template intersects with the measured horizontal line, correct?
All bulkheads are measured as described in the plans (I've repeatedly checked). Each one, measured against the reference line in the side panel, is a perfect fit between the chine line which is the bottom edge of my side panel, and the sheerline at the top. But I thought that the side panels overlapped the bottom panel, so that with the bulkhead in place, the distance from the bottom of the bulkhead to the sheerline should be the same distance as that on the side panel MINUS the thickness of the bottom.I find now that all my bulkheads will, should I attach the side panels so that they are flush with the bottom of the bottom panel, be high by approximately the (9mm) thickness of the bottom panel.
Did I plane off a few millimeters of plywood below the chine of the side panels that was meant to overlap the bottom panel?
Hopelessly fuddled: This is one ofthese things where I've been thinking too long about it to be able to make any sense of it, no matter how simple it might be.

The deck camber is an arc of a circle. So you don't need to line up the centreline. The plans say to mark the camber only but not to cut the bulkheads, leaving the excess there until the boat is assembled with centrecase, carlins, mast partners, deck supports and centrecase in place.
Then use the camber templates to mark the bulkheads in situ, they are cut along that line then more adjustment done to bring all the bits down to the curve. This means that deck clamps, coaming, mast supports centrecase top all get trimmed down at the same time This also compensates for the bottom thickness.

One thing to be aware of is that there have been problems with plan versions and I have to look at it once again. There is a replacement sheet to make sure the centreboard will fit in the case. Some have ended up too long fore and aft. So we can double check that before the centreboard is made.

Hi MIK and thanks! I've been here on the forum for awhile mostly lurking since this project has been slow getting off the ground. First, thanks for your detailed answer. A little push was what I really needed. So as far as marking the camber prior to assembly, that's mainly done in order to mask off what doesn't need coating, and therefore can be approximate?
The other question I have is about notching everything for the deck and chine logs...I was figuring I'd notch for the chine logs pre-assembly since you can't really put the bulkhead in without the notches, then cut those for the deck log after the bulkhead goes in?
It looks like the board case is the right length: I've checked it against the bulkhead lines already even though I've not glued it up yet. The board was a little long but I was unhappy with the leading edge anyway so I shed no tears as I cut about 5mm off and rounded it over again. Board might be a little thick but I was figuring I'd plane it down a bit before glassing it.

Wow, yes exactly the reason. I'd forgotten it but you worked it out!

Hi alrotch,
Hoping my thread (it was few years ago) can be useful for you - were shared many of photos of my build and there are many of building informations I think:
