I got a call from Hal on Tuesday morning. He reported that he had decided to drop out at the south end of Marco Island. He was hoping to enjoy himself this year, but the lack of any consistent wind meant that he was paddling nearly half the time with only half of his 2-piece paddle, and since his canoe had no seat or backrest, his parts were pretty sore. He told me that his small PolySail performed well, and that with wind he would often reach about 7 knots, but we both agreed that the lack of testing time and wind was a problem and both the boat and sail design could use significant improvement. Because of the interest in Hal's ride, we will coordinate a redesign that we hope to make available as plans later this year. Right now I think he is just happy to be spending some shore time with his daughter Rachel.
