    Hi,

    Good one Robert,

My original article asking the question whether a Dory is seaworthy is here ...

    http://www.storerboatplans.com/Faq/dory.html

David Luckhardt replies to the main points
    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DoryBoat/message/1513

I have just replied but the reply is not up on the forum yet and may not appear ...

    This is my reply
I don't know whether my original reply to David's Post will appear after I write this one - but it seems gone for the moment.

I did say that I was grateful to David for bringing up the discussion about what exactly the word "Dory" means.

There are certainly lots of boats around which are Dory in name only, where the word is used primarily in a marketing sense to invoke a sense of seaworthiness which may or may not be accurate.

    I have seen a 25ft boat with a 120hp outboard called a "Dory".

My feeling browsing the posts here is that it really does not need to be defined in the context of this group - you all know where you are going fine.

However my aim was more reflected by this Google search where I look for sites that have the words - dory plan seaworthy. Check it here -
    http://www.google.com.au/search?q=dory+plan+seaworthy

868 sites that link the word dory and seaworthy.

Within the historical context this might be fair enough (but still with caveats) but within the context of lightweight and smaller recreational dories it could not be further from the truth.

I doubt that Bolger would suggest that his Light Dory was OK for rowing across a stretch of ocean - despite its ability in lakes and estuaries.

However that is the claim that many of the sites are making in the Google search results in that the "As a small boat the dory is without pier (sic) as a simple seaworthy design".

It is just marketing fluff in most cases and the statements fall over as soon as you look to see how various people fail to define what they mean.

In the original posting I did make some further comments about lightweight dories - in particular Bolger's efforts where I was quite surprised at the width of the bottom panel at front and back of the boat when I drafted it up for the illustration on my webpage. They are a lot less fine than I would have made them.

Which means that if I made an attempt at drawing up a dory it might have been a teensy bit faster but a lot less stable. Bolger's knowledge makes him the master at those sorts of subtle compromises.

I did make the point that if you want to go to sea in a rowboat a heavy and big dory (ie traditional) would be a good choice compared to others.

Personally I would prefer something with a bar-fridge. (That's a joke - but one with a little point too!)

    Best wishes

    Robert is OK!

If you look at his various posts he has been a contributor here.

I don't think he has any concrete affiliation with the other forum and is just reporting something of interest.

    Thanks MIK!
    That's truth
I think this discussion would be interesting for people who are interested in your rowing boats and traditional dories as well.

(tell to the truth I'm a member and moderator of DoryBoat yahoo group -which is owned by GaryLambda- and I'm traditional small boats enthusiast and Boatmik's boats as well)

    Discussion is still in progress

    Last topic:Back to defining dory-ness...

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DoryBoat/

You can see it without joining that forum, but it's interesting for small boat enthusiasts and MIK's boats enthusiasts I think so.
