    I mentioned above that I needed to beef up the clamps that fix the drop-in mast partner to the inwales. I posted a photo showing that the clamp shifted under moderate winds despite my best efforts to screw the wing-nuts as tight as possible.

    These are details of my clamps: woosy little inadequates, and then after applying steroids. I've used two bolts instead of one, so it's not going to twist, and I've shifted the bolts outwards for better leverage. The outer end of the clamp is cut at an angle to approximate the curvature of the hull.

    Part of mast-step visible in first photo. It's of 19mm pine and extends across the bottom almost to the sides. It's glued (epoxied) in place so that the centre of the mast step is 480 mm forward of the middle of the spreader.

    The photos show my original mast-partner and then the second I've made so that I can choose to mount the leeboard some distance behind the mast. Something else to fiddle with. I'll be shifting the bolts on the first partner in the same manner as those on the second. Bolts also inverted with nuts at the bottom to remove a minor hazard.

    Michael - I think that your upgrades are going in the right direction. Less free points equals less opportunity to uncontrolled movements.

    I was out playing with balance this morning, in very light and patchy wind before the sea-breeze trickled in at 5-7 knots (I guess) as I was heading back to the landing.

    It seemed to me that moving forward and aft had some effect but moving side to side did next to nothing at any time. The biggest influence was swing the leeboard down/forward and up/back. It seemed that pulling the leeboard down to anything like what seemed a reasonable depth resulted in an immediate swing up to windward, which leaves me thinking that shifting the board back away from the mast will be a definite improvement.

    I was also playing with using the paddle as a steering-oar. Is there a correct way to do this? I think the most effective approach was to hold the paddle down close to vertical and to steer by rotating the shaft left or right. It seemed to cause a fair whack of drag as the wind picked up though - I was nowhere near as relaxed as all those chaps in Rob's pics seem to be.

    I headed back in left hand full of sheet and right hand on the leeboard (the board, not the control line), steering with some success. Didn't feel at all efficient though.

    The absolute big winner, though, is being able to handle the whole boat and rig on and off the ute by myself. Makes the whole event possible.

    "Moving side to side" should probably have said, "healing the boat to one side or the other", as it is that hard chine cutting into the water like the edge of a ski which causes the boat to initiate turn.

    Wonderful to see your experiments. Yes, it is not particularly relaxing. The addition of a rudder was a great improvement. Even with a rudder, sailing such a small boat provide a workout.
