I'm really pleased to hear that it's worked out OK, your experiences didn't reflect what I'd heard previously, and after one short paddle I'm completely stoked (to put it succinctly!)

Hi Doug

This link and this link have most all you will need on how to weave cane seats. The second link looks like you can buy the cane from them as well. I haven't looked for any other sources of cane for a while because my canoe plans went on hold a while back. If all else fails I believe you can get a synthetic lookalike (

)

Hi Peter,

I stumbled across your website and this forum whilst looking for ideas and inspiration on the topic of building myself a wooden boat / canoe.

I would love to see a finished product before I rush out and buy plans, materials and a whole host of unnecessary tools.

I live in Brisbane and travel to the Sunshine Coast from time to time. Would you mind showing your Eureka sometime?

While the poor old Eureka is floatable, it's well and truly suffering from being in the shadow of the PDRacers, but we should have it all under control in a week or three!

A PM is a Private Message Wayne. Click on the Quick Links menu item at the top of the page and select Private Messages. You can send them from there and read the ones sent to you.
To send one you to someone you can also hover over their name in a message list and select "Send ??? Private Message"

Thanks for that info Rookie.

And now the all important questions.

Time? How long should it take to build one?

Judging by the time it has taken Peter to build the Eureka I should safely guess that I could have one completed in about 3 years (I have my masters in procrastination - well, I will get around to finishing them someday).

The other question is that of price. From beginning to end what am I likley to spend on this little canoe?

Price:

Two sheets of 6mm plywood Gaboon preferably - $120.00
You'll need half a sheet for the seats decks and bulkheads, so make that $180.00
Timber I'm guessing $50 (I spent $30, but milled it myself)
Epoxy, glass tape and glue powder $120.00 (Boatcraft Pacific)
Varnish - say $40.00

Brushes, sandpaper, rollers and tape, say $20.00

Total around $400.00 for a Rolls-Royce version. I spent $80 on 4mm ply and had half a sheet left over, so my boat cost about $300.00 not bad for the end result.

Building: for a realistic time check out deepdug's estimate a couple of pages back.

Don't forget $75 +p&p for the plans. You've be hard up trying to make it without them!

It's just that I bought them 8 years ago, so I'd written them off in my mind! (They were about $60 then from memory so I've saved a bit more,

but I also bought the outrigger and paddle plans at the time..... watch this thread!)

You may have saved on the plans then but the paddle plans are now free too!!!

I bought all of the material from Duck Flat.

The original pack cost about $750.

I spent $82 on varnish but I have about half of it left.

I ran out of ply from 2.5 sheets.

I have several lengths of timber left over from the parts list.

I needed about 3 litres of epoxy plus 1.5 litres of hardener.

I estimate that the original construction took 40 hours with about another 10 hours to pull out the old seats and springer and widen the boat by 100 mm.

$20 for two cheap paddles.

$75 for the plans.

About $1,000 I suspect!

But there is method in my madness.

Most free plans are pretty poor. But the paddle plans are proper professional level plans

1/ step by step instructions on shaping and use of materials
2/ setup to match the paddles to the size of the paddler
3/ include the measurements for all jigs
4/ the resulting paddles work really well.
5/ clear diagrams
8/ clear materials list - timber and sizings, plywood, epoxoids etc.

So they are professional plans for free! So ppl can see the difference for themselves.

They are still worth the $45 that Midge paid for them - it's just that you don't have to pay it.

I think i had better go before I comfuwse myself.
