The instability is probably from the high seat. If the centre of gravity is above the point where your bum hits the seat then you are inherently unstable. You have to rebalance the canoe with your gut muscles wiggling your ars* from left to right or by leaning into your paddle as you stroke. Try to avoid the former since you can also rip your ars* crack apart. With a low C of G you have enherent stability.

TK1's (single seat touring kayak) are a damn sight easier to stay in than a K1 (racing) but there is a speed penalty.

I can't imagine I'll have too many troubles with the height of the seat, here's my bike:

I know of a couple of people that have, from the original drawings which I was supposed to be prototyping . Michael has had no feedback from them at all which is why he rather enjoys all the comments from the likes of yourself and I. (I know he's perfectly capable of saying that, but I have anyway!)

In the meantime, I've resolved the deck issue quite happily by fitting a centre stringer under the deck. I made this quite light, 8 x 18, and then quite easily bent 6mm ply over it, (it's a lot easier with two people though) and wrapped it with good old packaging tape.

I now have a nicely cambered deck all the way, and it was no real dramas (thankfully!).

I hope to get the outside glassed over the weekend, while playing with the PDRacers, so it won't be long and you won't be alone anymore!

Just so you don't think I've gone to sleep altogether in Eureka Land...

The boat is just about there. It's Storer's fault really, he never stops working on the PDRacers, and the thought of finishing them before the Eureka was just too horrifying for words.

In any case, once I've taped the outsides, we have a functioning boat, so will be able to go for a test paddle. Or could if we had any paddles.

1) Deck on, and rough trimmed. I planed back to the line of the hull sides before fixing the gunwhale.

2) Hull rough sanded and waiting for the gunwhale to go on. I wanted to do that before coating the outside, so the epoxy will fill any small crack in the joint.

3) Gunwhales on and clamped. Note judicious use of baling wire to keep them together at the pointy end. Michael won't be able to do too much on the PDR's today, because I pretty much used the last of the glue powder, and a useful number of clamps.

Provided I don't get too distracted by the little boats, I'll shape the end of the gunwhales this evening, and maybe hit the top with the belt sander, then tape the hull seams tomorrow morning, and apart from gluing the seats in, that will be the last of the construction process. Just sand, varnish, sand, varnish, sand, varnish, sand, varnish and sand, varnish to go...........

Hmmmmmmmm.

I have widened the canoe to the designed [but uspecified] width and repaired the damage that caused.

I have finished it without the seats as I will settle on seat heights after the sea trials.

I have had a fair bit of paddling experience and I am not used to being tipped out as I claim that it was not pilot error. I hope that the wider beam and lower seating position will vastlY improve the stability as it was not comfortable to paddle before and there is no way I would have risked a trip in the River Murray in that state.

I have attached a few photos. The first three show it after the final sanding of all of the expoxy repairs so that the repairs are clearly visible. The last two are after the varnish.

I have not yet finished researching cane seats and I will try various seat heights to see what suits me best. I see on the internet that Canadian canoe makers hang the seats from the gunwale and they are quite near to gunwale level in some cases. I wonder if the Eureka gunwales and inwales are strong enough to support the seat with my weight [88ks] sitting on them.
