The place we landed turned out to be a restaurant that served a really good pizza. I only drank "radler" (beer lemonade mix) as I didn't want to be over the limit paddling .

There were a lot of comments and questions about the branding and the name "Flatdog". Most people touched the branding in such a way that it looked like they thought it might explode. I was amazed at how people reacted. Sometimes it was a little bit embarrasing but in a nice way.

We took the Eureka out today to a local lake which is right next to the Rhine. I guess it's about 5km long. It must have been their weekend regatta. It's the first time we've made pic's of the canoe and it's the first time I've paddled it alone. The wind was about 10kmh with gusts to 15kmh. We got around the lake comfortably.

Great day: great canoe.

Joggle sticks! I was going back through your thread flatdog, reading it in more detail. (I get distracted by photos ). As I said in my other thread, beautiful example you've made but I'm amazed I've never heard of joggle sticks. All the reading I've done, forums and magazines then bam, there's the answer on page 4 of some troubles I've had during my build. This is a bit of a revelation as I really struggled to get the bulkheads on my Eureka to fit. I messed up at least one by making it too small. I'd shave a bit off this edge, a bit more off that edge and so on till there were gaps that were too big or the bulkhead was too small height wise.

For decks, I faired the gunwales and supports then curved oversized pieces of ply over the top, glued and screwed then planed edges flush with the gunwales. Pretty easy and it worked well but I don't have the exposed gunwale like yours and others have, which looks better IMO. Had I known about joggle sticks I would've easily attempted the decks as per plans.

I'd heard of a joggle stick before I built the Eureka but I had no exact idea what it was until I looked it up. It turned out to be a damned good tool and doesn't cost anything.

What I learnt on the build journey I've found I can use on my house as well. At the moment I'm making a top for a bathroom cabinet out of paulownia that I'm going to epoxy and varnish.

With Michaels plans, which are an education in themselves, plus the amount of information and the willingness of all these great contributors on this forum to share their knowledge and experience I really find it a great place to be. At the moment I'm reading Alex's PD Racer build thread. It's something you have to set aside a few days for.
