    Default Eureka in Germany.

It's happening at last. But first things first, fix the back door to the garage. Now I can get in. After the big cold things shifted a bit.

The over-size ply sheets seemed like a good idea at the time but when it came to marking them out it wasn't so easy. At first I layed them end to end on the floor and marked out the center line but because of the size they weren't so easy to move around plus it was freezing on the floor of the garage . I lifted them up on to saw stools but because of the extra width and length it is really difficult to get over the top of the sheets to read the tape/rule acurately. In the end I had to cut off the piece for the bulkheads and then I could cut off the side of the sheet. Next came the deck and things were back to normal. Well as normal as things can get.

I had to sort out the decks and cut them out as the point finished up between the bilge panels. In the end it all worked out.

I just had a hard time posting pictures on here, as you can see .

Hi .. you had just put the last image as a LINK rather than as an IMAGE ... just fixed it for you. The pics look great!

    Default The other half.

    Not my more beautiful half.

I managed to get the other half cut out but that was about it for this weekend . Other priorities took precedence .

I allways wondered what happened to Midges half a canoe. The prototype. Was the other half ever added?

    Howdy Kev,

The part boat was just from scrap ply to make sure everything fitted.

Biting Midge has the boat, it has been afloat, but I don't think the seats have been glued in yet. Some people take a bit more time than others!

It's all about the journey isn't it?

    .. and it moved yesterday.

From a piece of ceiling in the middle of the shed, to a piece of ceiling in a corner. It might be finished for Christmas, but who knows!

    Cheers,

Well so far so good . I carried the panels outside so I could set up some saw stools so I could do the sanding and everything held together fine. I brought out my collection of sanders but in the end sanded the whole lot by hand. I think partially to remind myself not to be so ham fisted with my pencil marks . The bottom panel where I'd marked the center line must be down to 4mm.

Actually I'm really happy. The Gabun/Okume looks great now it's sanded down and hopefully through the week I can get the three coats of epoxy on.

After the epoxy drama it was great to have a day just stitching the panels together. Their's a lot of satisfaction in seeing it all take shape.

It looks like a canoe! Glad to see you got the epoxy issues worked out.

Are you going to add any more spreaders before gluing? It might just be the photos but it looks to me like the ends should be spread wider. Actually, looking at photos it looks like maybe you add bulkheads to do this?

Either way, I look forward to seeing this come together. There's something so appealing about the simplicity and versatility of a canoe.

The spreader in the middle was only put there until I had the panels stitched. It's not even the right size. I'd only planned to do a bit of the stitching yesterday but I got such a good head of steam up there was no holding me back so I just threw a bit of scrap in as a spreader. The plans call for three spreaders to be in place before starting to do the fillets/taping. Michael also suggests clamping the gunwales in place which I'll also do. Aparently the gunwales keep the sheerline fair which later helps when fitting the bulkheads and decks.

I hope I got all that boat building lingo right.

I put in the spreaders and tightened up the ties last night and then this morning flipped the canoe over and checked for twist. I'm impressed how it came out. There's no sign of any twist in the hull. I checked again across the the the top of the sheerline with a level when we turned the hull back over and there's a whopping 4mm difference .

Michael. If I got this far with such a small difference you'd have to call the plans foolproof.

    Now for the gunwales.

    Aw Shucks Kev!

We do our best. But sometimes things go a little astray because of some random factor.

That's where this forum comes in useful!
