    Default Goat, deconstructed

A little late, but here's last weekend's update:

Almost all of these pieces are ready for assembly. The transom is only half ready and the foils are still raw blanks. A couple of parts need a final sanding.

I may be over thinking things, but here's my hull bottom with two wet-on-wet coats. I plan to sand down the cockpit area and add a third coat. I'm taking on faith that the bulkhead lines in the plans will line up with the actual bulkheads. If they don't, I can coat what I've taped off.

The thwart seat after two wet-on-wet coats, sanding, and a final coat. This will get sanded once more before assembly but I wanted to capture how the System Three Silver Tip epoxy worked for me. I could have sanded even smoother and I might do that with the tank seat tops.

I have chine log stock being scarfed right now and have lumber to rip for the gunwales and (hopefully) inwales. I plan to pre-coat the hull sides after the chine log is affixed and then... either go 3D or make snowmen depending on when this all takes place.

Wow! I can't believe how fast you work. It took me months to get as far as you've gotten.

Beautiful work. I can tell it will be gorgeous when it all comes together.

Ha! It's taken me months to get to this point, so I won't claim speed demon status. I just know all the things that lay ahead and my hopes for splashing this season start to dim. I'm not even saying "summer" anymore,

    Default Quickie update

Chinelogs are glued to the sides. Bulkheads are notched to match. Sides sanded to remove pencil marks, excess glue, and other imperfections. Tomorrow I might hit a coat or two of epoxy on the few panels that still need them. I might even dry fit the sides to the bulkheads (i.e. 3D rehearsal) but the weather just turned rainy and is supposed to remain wet for a couple of days.

After this weekend I will be pressing the pause button on the build for a while. Sadly, we have a family member in another state whose health is rapidly deteriorating and I will be off with my wife and kids visiting for about a week or so. For the record, cancer is stupid.

I had to hit a huge pause button in my build because my mom got cancer and passed away. Cancer sux, hang in there.

I'm sorry to hear that. Just found out one of my oldest buddies has mesothelioma, so I understand what you are saying. Go be with your family. The boat will wait for you. I'll hold you and your family in the light.

    Dave,

Nice progress on your build. I'm also in NJ, down next to Atlantic City. I would like to start my Goat this fall, and have it ready for next summer. That's the plan, but we all know what happens to plans.

By the way, I'm sorry to hear about the health issue with your family. I lost my dad eleven months ago to lung cancer, and my mom just went through a two-month hospital stay for a cancer of the bone marrow. Not fun, not fun at all.

Thanks everyone for the kind thoughts. While we lost a dear member of the family yesterday, I will be able to honor her memory with my GIS. I will be bringing home some nice pieces of lumber from the family farm, some hickory and some black walnut. Let's see if these pics will upload from my phone:

    Default The build resumes

As it turns out, boats don't build themselves. So I'm back at it. I was waiting on backordered rudder hardware and it arrived while I was away. So I avoided other more important tasks by fixating on shiny metal pieces...

I also found that some of my coating skills were not up to standard

This is either the result of not sanding a fully cured coat before adding more, or trying to use the last bit of a batch of epoxy that had already gone off. Either way, the underlying coat seems very sound. I'll sand it and hit it again before closing the rudder box for good.

I'll be indoors all weekend due to some windy chick named Irene. I'm well away from the coast, but expect to have plenty of rain to hide from.

Wow Dave, I have never seen epoxy peel of like that, even when I used old or already kicking stuff so hot you could not touch it. Still stuck like crazy. Maybe you had a surface contamination issue? Does your epoxy blush ...... when you talk dirty to it?

Pretty weird, huh? It's just this one piece. It's been awhile since I did it so I don't recall all the particulars. I don't think contamination was the issue since the entire layer came up uniformly. The epoxy is non-blushing (no matter naughty I am...) System Three Silver Tip. I'm guessing the original coating was just too cured to add another on top without scuffing.

Hope Irene treated you folks gently.
