Thread: GIS New Hampshire build

Looks like epoxy took on the runners last night. Ordered the sail and lines earlier this evening from Duckworks. The RSS sail. The spectra lines added up. Wasn't quite sure about all the blocks with the Ronstan fitting numbers verses race lite. All the info on this site starts to get overwhelming at times. I'm close though, few blocks, a can of primer and a can of varnish and then we'll finally have our own hole in the water to put more money into.

I've been pretty focused on trying to get the boat done before we move and haven't, to my wife's dismay, been as worried about packing for our upcoming move. Today I'm planning on really cleaning out the barn. Some of the stuff in the loft that I need to get rid of includes the beginning components of my abandoned Ougtred Artic Tern project. If anyone here would be interested in the forms, plans, and keelson assembly with attached garboards, I'd be happy to give them to you. I'm in seacoast NH.

Wow....I seriously wish I had a garage or barn to be able to take you up on that opportunity. I built my goat under a makeshift canopy and that didn't work all that well and I think the tern would take much longer to do. Sadness.

The tern was a bit big for the barn. I've got lots of loft volume but not a lot of square footage. Once the forms were in place, I didn't have much room left to make the planks. The goat solved that problem by using the space to cut all the big parts before a boat was in the way. Now that I have the Goat and just shelled out for all the components, I'm thinking my next boat will be a lightweight canoe, maybe the Eureka, I already have paddles and I can just put in on the roof of the car, no trailer, no sails, no motors, no oarlocks or hardware, no boat launch. I'm wondering why I didn't just do the canoe in the first place!

Yea that's a good looking canoe. I have an aluminum canoe already but I'm actually thinking of building two Kayaks next. Simple and cheap ones. Free plans at www.Spirainternational.com Lightweight and lots of cockpit room.

I would love an Arctic Tern though. Great looking boat. If only I had a more permanent type shelter to work on something like that. Maybe some day. By the way....there is a goat page on Facebook as well.

Well, I put the Arctic tern out in the lawn and it was gone when we came home from dinner. We live on a busy busy road which is in large part why we're moving. Good for getting rid of stuff. Funny what people take and leave when it's free. I have an old aluminum canoe as well. It was my Dad's, painted camo for duck hunting and it weighs a ton. I'd like something to carry into the ponds that is about half it's weight. Noticed the auto spell check doesn't correct duck when mistyped!

I'm about to glass the chines and epoxy coat the exterior of the goat. The instructions don't mention doing the transom edges. Should I do those too?

I assumed it was to be done as well so I did it. Makes more sense to do it than not.

As far as I understand you don't have to, but most people seems to do it and it really can't hurt.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will unless I run out of glass. Think I have plenty. Boat is all cleaned up and ready to go.

Thanks for the offer. I didn't post anywhere but here. I tried on the Oughtred site, but couldn't remember the password etc to post. I quit Facebook a couple years ago and only regret it in these type of circumstances. It's gone in Hampton somewhere. Might pop up on Craigslist. One fellow stopped and said he might be back. We were leaving for dinner so I put the plans in the car for him because I was afraid they might blow away. Someone else took the boat before he came back so I still have the plans. Those are easy enough to move. Once you start cutting the ties to your accumulated stuff, it gets easier and the next thing you know it's all out in the street and gone. Can't remember much of what it was now that a few days have passed. Feels good.

Hoping to glass the chines and epoxy coat tomorrow. Made the oars and put a coat of epoxy on them.
