AJ, I did a simple overlap of about 10mm. That width matched up nicely with the double stick tape (virtually the same width) and the maximum stitch width of my sewing machine, 7mm.
I felt comfortable with that narrow overlap because I'm using a triple point zig-zag stitch. If your new/old machine will do a plain zig-zag, you might want to widen the overlap to allow for two rows. If it only does straight stiches, then use three rows.
In my research, I never encountered a recommendation to overlap per your diagram, at least not for connecting the panels together. Check out Sailrite.com's free vidoes on their site. They have a great tutorial on seam stitching.Dave

Howdy,
Pro made sails I've watched being made - and ordered seem to have about 15 to 18mm overlap with a row of stitching just along both of the sailcloth edging. So every seam has two lines of stitching placed to prevent the cloth edges being picked up by ropes etc.
I think that is fairly conventional in Australian manufactured sails. It doesn't mean other schemes won't work of course.

Lots o' patches
I designed, cut, and sewed reinforcement patches last weekend. I still have two more to install, but they're made up and ready to go. I went with simple triangles, but chose not to be very symmetrical. This pic looks a little awkward because they're all so close to each other. Spread out, I think they balance with each other and the overall sail nicely.
