Inspired by John Goodman, I made my first GIS video, which I filmed sailing in the ocean outside a local harbor.

I'm thinking that it would be fun to rig the goat so I can troll for tuna and yellowtail. We have a lot of kayak fisherman around here doing basically the same thing, except paddling instead of sailing. To do this, I would need a way to douse the sail from aft, when I get hooked up - like running the halyard aft. A small sea anchor could be useful too, to hold head to wind. That would make a fun video!

Good video and I am honored to of been some inspiration.

There are some video's that show how some of the kayaks have built sea anchors and rigged them. For single handling I would think this concept could be adapted on a Goat so you don’t have to go forward and drop the sail.

If you call me the next time you go out I will hold the camera for you.
I work up in Orange, CA, but my Goat is in Texas.

Fun video! Fun to see people enjoying their Goat Island Skiffs.

So, I take it you unstep the mast when the boat is in the water? I'm not brave enough to try that yet.

Hey John, I'll definitely take you up on that! It would be really fun to take the boat down to the San Diego Wooden Boat Festival, especially with a real GIS builder to go with!

Bob, yeah, mast goes in and out in the water for me. It's pretty easy ... now that I have a technique down.
    (0) I put a towel in my transom slot, and another inside the boat bow. You can see these in the video.
    (1) Stand in the midline just in front of the centerboard box - turned so that the mast will pass your left side as you lower it in place.
    (2) Lift out the mast with your right hand lower on the mast and left higher.
    (3) Keeping your right hand in the same place, let the mast head lean to the stern as you slide your left hand towards the mast head.
    (4) Place the foot of the mast in the bow towel, and rest the head on the stern.

The key is sliding your left hand way up the mast to have total control of the weight as the mast leans over.

I'll make a video of this the next time I go out!

I found this tutorial for an easy trolling handline:
