That's our GIS, "Sisu". That transom cap is one of several unapproved mods done to her. It's overkill. Unneeded beef and weight. The motor notch was also our own idea, and it has worked just fine. The metal protecting the varnish is simple brass sheet (I don't recall the thickness offhand, but flimsy won't cut it). This we sanded with a random orbit to give it some texture (thus hiding future scrapes and such) and left to weather.

I don't think the standard transom needs any significant reinforcement to handle a small motor, say 2 hp or so. The thrust of the motor will be down from the top, probably very close to seat-top level.

Thanks for the advice guys. Arbor, that's a beautiful boat. It is the first pic of a GIS that I ever saw when I looked it up online, which quickly lead to me purchasing the plans. I got the hull drawn out today. Plan to cut it tomorrow. Oh, how did you attach the brass?

I'm still looking for lumber. I do have several things lined up including the $$$ which is really significant. Maybe something real will happen in the next few days.
