Hello John,
Great post!
I think I will stick with the original configuration and keep things simple.
Did I understand correctly from the Texas 200 site that you and MIK will be doing the event together in GIR this month?
If so, have fun! I would like to participate as well one year, as it sounds like a truly nice event with a lot of nice folks participating.
Best regards,
Joost

Yes, that is correct that Mik and I will be sailing together.
I am going to attempt a "live reporting" each evening of the Texas 200, if I can get a wireless connection.

Good report John.
I've always wondered if one of those promotional flags would work to keep the bow pointed head to wind? It could be simply rolled up when not in use. A triangular one would be easier to store in the boat and could be attached to a simple bracket on the transom.

Feedback from Michael about the yawl was good. The only changes he suggested was to make the drain hole for the mast larger. Water collected in the mast tube and did not drain.
Another way to deal with this is to use a canvas boot around mast which I will probably do for mizzen and may also do for main in response to this feedback.
Also, we discussed the mizzen dimensions should be 1" square with a slight taper at ends. The mizzen should have a hole in one end rather than slots in both so the sprit does not get lost.
Did I miss anything, MIK?
Here is my "perpetually unfinished Goat" on display the the Wooden Boat Show with MIK, myself and Christophe. Also pictured is how to load a GIS, EBDS, and three EBDS kits + all supporting materials/tools into a 17' Uhaul truck rental.

You all are a motley bunch to be sure, I wish i had been there!
The pics and videos from the TX 200 are amazing. She's a right capable little craft indeed. I cant wait to get back on the water myself.
I would have been out last weekend, but i am a trailer hitch short and the boat is 3 km from the bay
Oh well, soon enough
cheers,

I second the question! I'm fairly convinced I will be building the Yawl variant, so any modifications or updates to Clint's (most excellent and well-priced) plan/supplement would be greatly appreciated.
Any more insight into MIK's thoughts on the 2" round mizzen?Dave

Sorry...the sprit boom for the mizzen should be 1" square for stiffness. The mizzen diameter is 2 1/8" I believe. Would have to look.

Backing up with mizzen
Here my wife and I make our first attempt at backing up our GIS using just the mizzen. Since a few on the forum suggested I try to use the mizzen to go backwards, we gave it a shot.

It worked great!

John,
Thanks for sharing that. Y'all keep stirring thoughts of adding a mizzen to Sisu!

John,
Yes, thanks for sharing. That is very impressive! It does make one think about adding the mizzen to convert to a yawl rig (along with the other benefits a yawl rig offers).Building Gardens of Fenwick, a Welsford Parthfinder

John, great tip (on the long video) about the length of the sprit. A longer sprit puts it within reach of the helm. Clint's plans show 4' 6" for the sprit; is that what length yours is?

My wife measured the sprit at 60 inches since I am back in southern CA. Clint made this sprit for me at the last minute before the 2010 Texas 200. If mine was 6 inches shorter I think it would still work well. For me the 60 inch sprit is just close to perfect.
I have found the mizzen very useful for the type sailing I do. Just last weekend my wife and I used the mizzen twice to help hold the boat while we where putting up the front sun shade and later when we put in the number 1 reef. I have only had one time it was problem but that was in winds above 20mph. In that much wind I could of just rolled the mizzen around it's mast to get rid of it.
I think Mik began to like the mizzen toward the end of the 2011 Texas 200. We used it a lot.

Good measurement...60" it is on the plans!
Mizzens are too much fun. I was surprised the wind on the bow didn't overpower the mizzen.
Some other feedback from MIk from Texas 200. When seawater gets into the mast tube for the fwd position, if the mast fits the step tight, the water may not drain out and fill the tube. I plan to leather the mast to keep it from chafing. I will add a plywood ring around the partner, and use a canvas boot cinched around ply ring and mast to keep water out.
Attached is a more up to date plan with some notes added. I was able to pull the mizzen aft and move it closer to centerline of boat, about 5 1/2" away, but I'd go 6" minimum. Other notes on plan.
