Yep. Even better (for me at least) would be a nice hotel room right alongside.

Haha, as much as I like living in tents ... that is sometimes a tempting thought!

    Default Back to Work!

    Hi everyone,
It's been a little while and I apologize for my absence but I got a bit distracted. My lovely fiancee just got married a few weeks ago! It was a lot of fun, and a great chance to see family and friends. But it also has been a great deal of work, and we are enjoying settling back into our snug little apartment and getting back to everyday life together. It is especially exciting for me because I have had time to make some real progress on the GIS.
Also, I've gotta say it has been very exciting and inspiring to see John Goodman and Callsign finish their boats and begin to sail them. I am jealous, and trying to catch up!

Here are some pics of the gunwales going on. I just glued in the knees and breasthook tonight and will try to post photos tomorrow.

Geez mate, I hope it was YOU she married?

I guess she did because "it was a lot of fun..."

It's great to see you back into it....the boat that is.

    Hi Al,

Congatulations to at least one and maybe both of you!

I think that type of busyness is acceptable in my book.

I got to ask, are you putting large watertight hatches in the compartments?

Also, with the daggerboard trunk, do you have some plan going on there, or did you just leave out the top filler piece that goes underneath the seat?

She's looking good! Keep on keeping on.

    Thanks Woodeneye,
It was in fact me she married, bit of a typo there. She is very supportive of my new obsession, er i mean hobby! I cant wait to take her out in the new boat. (she's been out in the duck, but it's a lot less comfortable for 2 than the goat will be.)

    Hi Callsign,
I am indeed putting big watertight hatches in the forward and aft tanks. I realize that to some eyes they are not necessarily the prettiest, but they were relatively inexpensive, (only a little more than the usual round ones) and it will be easy for me to use them for storage of light things like extra pfd's, boat cover and the like. also they provide pretty good access to the insides of the tanks for maintenance and repairs.

As far as the daggerboard case is concerned I actually put the little cleats that support the center seat in last night when I glued the knees in, so that is going to be pretty normal. I will try to glue the seat down soon, it is getting epoxy coated right now, and I still have to add the daggerboard case front gusset as per MIK's plans.

It's pretty exciting to be getting so close now. After i finish with the centercase details (a day or two) I can flip the hull and move on to fiberglass taping and fairing everything out. I just picked up a bunch of really nice epoxy primer and 2 part urethane paint for a job and I think there's enough left over for my skiff. It's really tough stuff, and I look forward to seeing how it holds up.

    cheers
    -Al

    More Progress!
I glued in the center seat the other day.

Then I looked at the hatch in place for a while and did nothing

Today I flipped the hull and started work on the chine taping.

Here is what it looks like from underneath:

And from the side, It's almost a real boat!

    Default Rudder Hardware

One of the things I've really been looking forward to is making all of the little pieces of metal hardware on the boat. I am a metal fabricator by trade and i have a lot of brass and bronze left over from numerous jobs. I figured i'd start with the rudder hardware.

    Rudder box and brass strip

    Horizontal bandsaw

    Vertical Bandsaw

    Handfile. best part!

    Then after soldering:

Having a look at the fit

The pair ready for final sanding and polishing

    Until next time,
    Al

    Thanks Guys!

The pins are 5/16" 360 Brass rod and they are silver soldered in place. It's going to be a bit tight getting them into the gugeons with the tiller handle through the transom slot, but I think I have an Idea that might work for solving that. I'm going to try to get the gugeons done later in the week. For the time being I have alot of sanding and fairing to do. I'm using a microbaloon fairing mix from a supplier in florida, and it seems to mix and sand well (much more easily than the cab-o-sil mix that i've been using for gluing.
