    G'day again
The state emergency services did a fantastic job containing and eventually controlling the bushfire. There's still some isolated spot fires but for the most part it's over and people are returning home. The damage was limited to 6 houses (only minor damage) and about 500 hectares or so of semi rural property and scrub. Thankfully my place was untouched but it got close for a bit.

Well back to the garage cum boatshed. This evening I've trimmed and rounded off the bouyancy tank tops. I'm gluing up the scarfed sections ofthe inwales at the moment. Next step is to fillet the tank tops. Time to get cracking.

    Dan out.

    Back again

Over the past few days I've managed to get a bit more time in the boat shed in and around earning a living etc. Achievements for this part of the adventure include shaping the knees, filleting the tanktops, gluing on the gunwale and rubbing strip, cutting in the mast partner holes in the tanktops, and cutting up all the spacers. I've fled the gunwale on with the slight lift Mik suggests for the bow and stem, we'll see how it looks when the whole lot is planed down (in any case it's a weight saving).

    And now my one picture.

    Until next time

    Time for a quick update.

Since my last post I've managed to epoxy the interior and fit the inwales. I'm still planing down the whole sheer now to match the ply.

It's a fair bit of work planing it all down, especially because I can't use power tools (I'm looking at you belt sander) after 7pm. But it's a good workout for the arms at least.

I've sourced a trailer, licenced but it needs a lot of tlc. Also MIK is currently working out the details to get one of the new rss sails sent here. I can't wait.

    G'day again

Since my last post I've planed down the inwales, installed the knees and breast hook, flipped the hull and commenced the fairing process.
    Some fairing required
    Ready to impale innocent bystanders

I've also got a trailer. Licenced but needs work. I'm going to replace the main boom and remove all the rollers and bunk work, derust, cold galv and paint. So nothing too much.

Oh yeah I also jumped on the kickstarter bandwagon to help get the new book 'Jagular Goes Everywhere' off the ground. I first read about it on Duckworks and couldn't resist.

    Until next time.

    G'day again from Perth
This weekend I've been undercoating and sanding the hull. I'm pretty sure I mentioned how much I hate sanding. Anyway I started with 40grit and stepped through to 240grit with the random orbital sander. I've got it mostly smooth with a few bits that need a bit of epoxy filler. That being said how smooth does it need to be? I've got a few areas with some orange peel. Will the topcoat (aquacote) flow out and fill the cracks or will it just highlight them?
I'll have to wait a bit before my next coat. So I'm fishing for answers before then.

    The hull sanded.

One of the areas of concern.

My sail has arrived from RSS now I've got to finish the spars to go with it.

    Until next time.

    G'day all

It's been a while since my last post but I've been a bit busy. The hull is now painted and I've moved onto the varnishing. I've still got to tackle the spars and finish the oars but the end is nigh.

I've got one of the local salvage yards doing the repairs to the trailer so it'll be ready for pickup next weekend.

    Some photos of the progress
    The painted hull.
    Varnishing underway.
Shiney. The Huon Pine has come out really nicely under the epoxy.

    Until next time

Looking VERY nice! I just now see your Battering Ram treatment; that must have taken some time to sort out so nicely. It one the areas that makes each GIS unique and you can be proud of your efforts there.

    Keep it up!

    Thanks Dave

It's been a busy few weeks at work but I'm getting on top of the varnishing. I've got auxiliary propulsion sorted in the form of a pair of 9ft oars. I've built them with trapezoidal shafts as per the pdf from the Gaco oars website (http://www.gacooarlocks.com) but I've extended them to 9ft and laminated the blades as per MIKs dimensions.

Here's the oars receiving the first lamination. They'll get two 4mm layers of Gabon plywood (leftovers from enclosing bhd 3).

Here's the oars shaped and sanded smooth with the first 2 coats of epoxy (man I've gotta clean the garage).

    My trailer all refurbished.

Boat meet trailer (I've still got to add the bow chock)

All taped up and ready for the non-skid.

I've still got to make up some more staves for the mast, lots of scarfing to be done but I should be able to knock over another 2-4 staves this weekend.

I should probably get around to glassing the rudder as well.

All said and done I should be able to get it wet in the next two weeks.

    G'day all

I achieved first splash today, I took the boat out for a row around one of the local harbours. My kids loved it though my wife was a bit nervous at first. She provided much needed conning throughout, LEFT! RIGHT! STRAIGHT! WATCHOUT FOR THE BUOY! You know the normal stuff.

Now I've gotta finish the mast and yard, and commission it.

    Hi camarade!
    She looks fine.
My Goat is on the way also, but not yet on the waters.

And I also do hate sanding, but who does?

You said your ordered the main sail from MIK's philippin factory.
    But what about the mizzen??
I dont know yet wether I will make them fabric at my local sail-loft or not.

    Hear from you soon, racoon

Thanks for the kind words gents.

I took her for her second sea trial while camping over the Easter long weekend. And decided on her name "Undine", time to get some stickers made )

For those that have made a birdsmouth mast (I'm looking at you Dave) did you bother glassing them? And if so to what extent?

Looking great D'Jack, I'm going to try making my own mizzen using Clints basic specs and the book The Sail Makers Apprentice. It's a small auxiliary sail so it's perfect to experiment with.

    Until next time Dan out

    ...
A different Dave I hope; my mast is hollow square. BUT I did glass according to plans, which means the bottom 3 feet or so and the top 1 foot or so. These areas are high contact with the spars, the partner, and the step. Precision measurements not necessary here; make the best use of the fiberglass cloth you have available.
