Default Goat Island Skiffs in Southern California?

Hi. I haven't seen a Southern California build mentioned either here or on the WB forum. If anyone has one they're willing to show off, let me know. I'd like to see and ideally sail in one.

I guess no answer is an answer.

    Dustin,

Timing is everything... I just (well, 2 weeks ago) moved my GIS from Sacramento to Austin, TX and went through the LA basin on 210. Sorry, I missed you by "that" much.

I live in Houston, Texas but work in Orange, California, so my GIS is 1500 miles away sitting in my garage back in Texas. I would gladly meet to talk about building a GIS. If you are close to Orange I can drive to meet you. Going south to Laguna Beach is a reasonable drive for me after work. I am only here (Orange) during the week though.

In the mean time look thru Texas GIS on the forum or go to: Flickr: Texas GIS' Photostream

By about two miles, in fact. I don't think I'd yet discovered the GIS, however.

The Get Smart reference is much appreciated.

Unfortunately I'm the other way, in Pasadena. I'd offer to take you for a plastic-boat sail, but there isn't much time after work and the boats I have access to are in Marina del Rey. At rush hour "you can't there there from here."

I might manage to come down on an evening next week, though. I'll check my schedule.

There were two built at the San Franscisco Maritime Museum. I think they raffled one.

    My contact there was Seth.

You realize both Vegas and Phoenix are closer than SF, right? What have ya got on Lake Mead or the Colorado River lakes?

I'd love to hang around their boatbuilding shop sometime. The time I was there they had a reproduction of one of the local feluccas that I *really* wanted to sail--I've never sailed a lateener except I think something with a Sunfish rig, which doesn't quite count.

I managed to sing a shanty or two on board Thayer while I was there too. I think I spent more time drooling over Balclutha than anything else, though.

So when will you publish plans for the square-rig option for the goat?

    Hi Dustin,

Yep - I know that even within the same state they can be a long way away - we have a similar problem here

Just so you know that there are some there.

The balance lug is the closest relative to the square rig - both spars extend past the mast on both sides - so you can't feel tooooo left out amongst the square riggers!

    Best wishes
    Michael

It was more a comment about the, ah, aspect ratio of California, but yeah you guys would not need the West explained at all. Unlike the Israeli couple I met who went to Montana State as graduates students, and being experienced European tourists decided to do the sophisticated thing and see the country rather than flying in. So they flew to New York, bought a used car, and set out.

Unfortunately, they didn't check the scale on the road atlas to see if it might perchance be a bit different than what they'd used in Europe. Somewhere in Pennsylvania or something it hit them that they'd been stopping in small towns for a week and had barely made a dent in the trip.

Imagine trying to do the same in Australia.

I'd have said dipping lug was closest, since the course is the basic square sail even if the topsails became the working sail. But that didn't seem quite insane enough to suggest, since I could probably just take the boom off a loose-footed balanced lug and set it as a dipping lug. I was trying to ask for something a lot more crazy than that.

I was hoping for extra points for asking for it on a hull particularly mis-matched with the rig.

If you're commuting back and forth, would it be possible to bring the plans so I could take a look? Or does that break the rules about what you can and can't do with plans in some way or the other?

I'm wondering if I should just come down and eat supper down there some evening next week. I'd like my wife to see the plans too, but if we both come then so will the boys, which tends to be rather distracting.

Take them across the state border and I am ringing Efraim Zimbalist Junior.

(You have to be a certain vintage).

    I've no objections.

In the last week I've had to give a seemingly ever-expanding explanation of just who Kevin Kline is. And Bob Dylan.

Lately cultural references seem to be so much work!
