    Default Louis Vuitton Cup

A very interesting last match race between ETNZ and Luna Rossa. Luna Rossa displayed much improved speed and handling to make a better fist of the race than the past round. Then it all got very interesting as ETNZ lost their jib during the first upwind leg when the halyard broke. Surprisingly, the lack of a jib did not seem to handicap them in any way as they continued to extend their lead. Very impressive stuff!

Clearly the jib doesn't do much for speed at all.

Looks like a protest may be lodged by Luna Rossa as ETNZ's chase boat got in the way of Luna Rossa when they were retrieving the jib from the water, and LR was forced to tack away.

On Tuesday this week we were treated to another procession as Luna Rossa went head to head with ETNZ in RR4, R1. LR was never in the race and ETNZ presented a magnificent spectacle as she sprinted around the course. However, a match race it was not.

ETNZ's crew work was flawless after the jib mishap last week, with plenty of foiling gybes. By comparison, Luna Rossa's speed seems well short of ETNZ's, and her crew work is also not as slick. LR dropped off the foils nearly every time she gybed and she was markedly slower onto the foils after her top mark roundings. ETNZ's bow seems to point higher when "launching" onto the foils or bearing away, whereas LR digs her bows somewhat. Perhaps LR needs some foil tweaking? Anyway, these big cats look magnificent when at speed and their crews are truly a privileged species.

It has also been great to see the launch of the new Artemis following their tragic accident and listen to Nathan Outteridge's commentary of his team's progress. The new boat went sailing yesterday and foiled on it's first outing. Nathan had a huge grin as he stepped off the boat, so we can guess that things went much better than expected. The Artemis wing looks a lot different to the others, so I can't wait to see how she goes on the race track. Make no mistake, the Artemis crew will have lots of catching up to do if they are to have a chance of knocking off ETNZ. Let's hope we will see some proper match racing soon.

I'm sure Bart will be watching over his talented team mates. I certainly would not discount any team with the the talent they have on board. Check out the sailing genes of the Artemis team! Team

    Great footage!

Are the boats not just going to fast however to allow for proper match racing?

If you know that your boat speed is far higher than the other boat, why take the trouble of sticking with the other boat instead of taking the fastest route along the buoys?

Yes Joost, that's the trouble to date, no match racing as it's been a two boat contest with one of them so much faster it's not funny. Hopefully with Artemis in the mix from 6 Aug things will squeeze up a bit. We can only hope.
