My friend with the house on the beach in Westbrook came out unscathed, he even has power and cable etc. Hopefully Paulie came out with little worries too.

Default re: Northeast US Goat Gathering in 2014 - 26 -29 September

We live! Some VERY close calls, but no real damage.

My neighbor's tree fell across the road, taking out three light poles and coming within a whisker of the house, my wife's car, and the garage in which my GIS was stored. Storm surge came up the road to within 15 feet of the property. 4 other big trees down within a block.

Town crews got the road open this afternoon, freeing the car, but there are still wires and dead transformers all over the street. We won't have power for several more days at least.

But counting our blessings. No one hurt. No damage except to the arborvitae. Generator running solid. Neighborhood in general took much less damage than during Irene. Could have been much worse.

    Sent from my cell.

Glad everyone is doing well all things considered.

I talked to my old partner who is still in the old studio in Brooklyn. They had 6 feet of water in the studio! I think they are mostly ok though. The forklift put most of the equipment that doesn't swim up high. Holy crap though, I'm glad I'm in Toronto now!

    All the best guys,

What are these new builds in MA and CT?

And I will say this: A lake in MA would SUCK. No lake sailing. Salt. Distances. Steady winds. Goats need room to roam. I would drive a longer distance for salt.

Interested only if I have the time. (harsh but true, lots of competing interests, unfortunately).
Christophe....you don't know a lack of time until I see litte kids (not baby Goats) running circles around you and Allison! maybe baby goats are not in your future....

Regarding the Maine boat, that would be Dana Luken's GIS. I made his sail rig and his is the one that helped me decide to build one not to mention cut the kits.

    Cheers

How's THIS for digging up the dead?!?

The time to plan for 2014 is now! We are starting to achieve a critical mass of Goats in the Northeast, enough that our gravitational pull will affect others from as far away as Canada or even... GASP... Michigan! New Hampshire might soon outnumber other Northeastern states in number of Goats. You should out-vote the rest of us and set the place. And the date. And all the other little details (like dress code).

Oh, no! Not - GASP - Michigan!

Could happen. Next year's calendar isn't filled up yet...

Figure out a time and place and we'll (Jan and I) see what we can do to be there.

    Ill be there!

Scraping the snow and ice from the boat cover, That is assuming they'll let a foreigner back in...

I vote for Casco Bay. The Maine island trail is something that Christophe is a member of, and there are numerous and beautiful places to camp and visit when sailing around there. (see Christophe's blog)

Membership is $45 for a year and allows you to camp on numerous islands in the area. Seems like a cheap camping fee for a few nights and a good group to support to boot!

Just an idea though. I'm up to go anywhere. Over the last 2 years I've been sailing Periwinkle a whole lot and am really very much in love. I'd love to get together with others who feel the same.

    See you guys there!

    Default Spring 2014 Goat Together

    All right sailors,

I think it is time for us to make this happen.

I was thinking a 2 or 3 night camp out on the Maine Island Trail launching and ending up at the Portland Municipal Boat Launch. Christophe knows a lot more about this than I but highlights include Little Chebeague Island and Jewell Island. Maybe early May?

We could style it like a RAID, and have some friendly competition followed by debriefing around a campfire with suitable libations.

    What think you all?

Brrrr... You've really embraced the Great White North, eh? Early May off the coast of Maine sounds like frostbite to me! But I'll poll potential crew and see if I can mount a campaign. Count me as tentative leaning yes.

I'd enjoy meeting up, but don't think I'll have my boat ready for sailing by early May. Hopefully it will be ready for the water, though, and we'll have done a little trolling at ice out for salmon by then!

    No problem,

    Lets do summer then!

I'd rather get as many Goats together as possible.

    Default The undying thread!

Although time marches on, the Great Goat Gathering Fantasy Thread will not die!

I was looking at the GIS World Map and it occurred to me how the spread of Goats in the North American Northeast has its center of mass vicinity of... New York's Finger Lakes. That's not particularly close to anyone; Al in Toronto would probably have the shortest haul. But...

I propose Seneca Lake! It has two state parks, one with camping--Sampson State Park--and one that's more of a day beach recreation area--Seneca Lake State Park. I could envision Goats camping in Sampson SP and sailing north about five plus miles to Seneca SP, beaching for lunch and photos, then beating our way back (the lake is about two miles wide). According to iKitesurf, it's a great place to sail. The Seneca Yacht Club is adjacent to Seneca SP and they have a fleet of Stars, Thistles, and a Cruising Class. They also sponsor the Seneca Sailing Academy with the typical dinghy classes. With some coordination, maybe we could visit them as a class.

I will try to generate interest on the home front and with Pat Daniels & Family. It might be an interesting fall foliage tour? I think that's also wine country.

    Thoughts anyone?

Although time marches on, timing is everything...

Seneca Lake sounds like a great venue for a Goat Gathering. We're interested in joining in the fun (Seneca Lake is about an 8 hour drive from Western Michigan) so we'll stay tuned for further news and info.

Google Maps says Sampson State Park is 6hrs for me. No further than I'll be going for the Small Reach Regatta in August. It also says "Prime destination for camping & boating", right on the map. Who am I to argue with the great Google?

Leaf season could work. On the one hand, it looks like the company I work for will be shuttering its bankrupt doors in late summer, leaving me unemployed and unencumbered during leaf season. On the other, I do have immovable commitments the first two weekends in October. If we can avoid those two weekends, I'm in.
