We might be interested in a trip to the finger lakes. I still haven't got the varnishing completed on the mast and spars (maybe next week) but otherwise the boat is done. We're heading to Cooperstown on August 10 and could possibly combine the trip or we could make a separate trip in the fall. We were in southern NH but just moved to Massachusetts (north of Boston) last month.

Interesting development! That puts you a touch closer to the Mass Pike/I-90 which would carry you all the way to Seneca Lake.

Also, send Paulie (or post here) your location and other build/launch details for inclusion on the GIS World Map.

Default Northeast US Goat Gathering in 2013? 2014?

So I wrote to the Commodore of Seneca Yacht Club to explore a courtesy call. His reply is very encouraging:

    Dave,

Thank you for your note. We talked about your needs at our board meeting last evening. We would be happy to welcome a visit from your group sometime later this year. Our club calendar is posted on our website, so you can avoid our busier weekends. We are a small facility, and if we are hosting a large event, guests can get lost in the mix.

It is possible to sail from Sampson State Park to our club, but in a fifteen footer, it could be a long day. In the summer, our winds are often from the south, so it could be a long beat back. A strong westerly would be a bit faster, but round trip would still be the better part of the day.

SYC is a very relaxed, member operated club. We don't have a bar or restaurant, but there are charcoal grills and picnic tables and about 1000 feet of lakefront. If you come on a weekend with a half dozen boats or less, you could tie up overnight on our Junior sailing moorings or at their dock.

We race informally every Sunday through Labor Day. The starting gun is at 10 AM. The club races Stars, Thistles and Cruising class boats. When the racing is over, around 1:00 PM the beer is free on the clubhouse porch. Please join us as my guest if your group is in town. Just let me know.

    Tom Toher
    So...

Check your calendars folks. I think it has to be mid to late September based on the SYC calendar. I nominate 26-29 Sept. Which is Friday-Sunday.

    What says ye all?

Thanks for reaching out to the Seneca club, Dave. I think we would be interested in attending that weekend. How ready we might be for full on sailing is yet to be seen, but we could at least meet up, sail a bit, hopefully learn from the others and bring along the camping gear, food and beverages. I'll speak with my wife to see what she thinks. I don't know what the wind does at that time of year, but otherwise I imagine it would be a beautiful time of year to visit the area.

Yes! Thanks for taking the lead on this.

That weekend in clear on my family's calendar. Grabbing it for myself now. Don't know if I'll be able to convince my wife to join us -- I'll have just hauled her up to Maine in August for the Small Reach Regatta. But I'll be there.

Dang it! Of course there's no room at Sampson State Park. I'm looking at Cayuga Lake. I'll try to reach out to Ithaca Yacht Club with a similar introduction, but their online calendar seems as though they are done with their season beginning September (beach closes Sept. 7). Plus, they are at the very southern end of the lake, whereas there looks like camping opportunities farther north, which is also much closer to automotive routes for most.

    More to follow...

Cayuga Lake State Park, $25/night for:

    • Site Type: Campsite
    • Site Reserve Type: Site-Specific
    • Site Access: Drive-In
    • Checkin Time: 3:00 pm
    • Checkout Time: 11:00 am
    • Type of Use: Overnight
    • Electricity Hookup: 30
    • Min Num of People: 1
    • Max Num of People: 6
    • Pets Allowed: Domestic
    • Maximum Number of Pets: 2
    • Max Num of Vehicles: 2
    • Driveway Surface: Gravel
    • Driveway Entry: Back-In
    • Max Vehicle Length: 20
    • Looking For Category: RV Site,Tent Site,Trailer Site
    • Site Rating: Standard

I think reserving three adjacent sites would allow for as many as 18 people or as little as 3 (although it would be overkill for so few). Two sites might be sufficient. There are a very few cabins still available at $54-66/night if one did not want to tent camp. I propose reserving 3 nights, (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) so that one could sail comfortably on Sunday without worrying about checking out at 11:00 am.

There are nearby site-seeing opportunities for those whose party includes non-sailing members, including an impressive waterfall about 20 miles south along the lake's shore. Maybe we could trailer the Goats over to Seneca Yacht Club one of the two days just to change the scenery and to take advantage of the hospitality they've offered.

    Thoughts?

    Supplemental costs:

    $5/night out-of-state surcharge
    $9 online booking fee

also, I got this message when trying to book two adjacent sites:
We are pleased that you are looking to book multiple sites for this campground. However, when reserving more than 1 site(s) for the same timeframe, you will need to book additional sites separately with a unique customer-name/sign-in per site. Thank you.

    So, there's that...

    It's a lock:

26 -29 September 2014, Cayuga Lake State Park, New York, United States of America. Campsites 5 & 6 (possibly 4 & 7 if required and still available)

Possible excursion to Seneca Lake TBD.

Bring tent, food, a means to cook it, beverage of your choice, and children (for ballast). Bring Goat Island Skiff. Sea Pearls welcomed, but not eligible for prizes.

We're in. My wife and son (he's 8) will join us and we'll leave the dog at home. This will give me incentive to actually get the sailing rig set up soon. We may end up fishing some, too. If you think I should book one of the adjacent sites, Dave, I will. We're looking forward to it.

No need to book a site right now. You make four goats confirmed and two sites are plenty. If we get two more parties, then a third will be good. Welcome aboard!

Reminder bump. BobWes, AlZuger, Clint, anyone else I missed, let us know if you're coming. We have four Goats confirmed; we can blow the record out of the water with a couple more! But if we get more, we'll need another site so please speak up.

Hey Dave...Alan here from the WBF GIS $125 plan thread.

So I think adding a GIS to the stable is a really great idea. The idea of a very light and quick skiff is just too irresistible. It's the perfect boat for my local lake.

I won't have time to build one in time, but if I buy my plans, can I come to the campout? I just cleaned up my old 1969 Cox Commander pop up and camped Niagara a couple of weeks ago. It could use another trip before the season ends and I couldn't think of anything more fun that hanging out with some GISers.

Alan, welcome aboard! Please scan your receipt for $125 and upload so we can prove you really paid...

    GOTCHA!!!

If you you have the time and the inclination to make the trip (and a set of GIS plans it seems...), I'm pretty sure you'll be a great addition to the party. We have two campsites right now. Your camper might warrant a third site.

I think we're all traveling on Friday and will sail Saturday and at least Sunday morning. Our campsites are good for Sunday might, so there's no rush to depart.

There will be some young kids in attendance, so plan on this being a family affair. But kids do eventually go to bed, so consider what sort of libations you might want to use to ensure the highest quality of GIS feedback.

PM me with your home address. If there's gonna be another Jersey Goat, I need to know exactly where to find it!

Also, check out the GIS Facebook page. Lots of discussion going on there, though I prefer and recommend this forum as the place to chronicle your own build. It helps keep all discussion in a single thread related only to your build. Plus there are some GREAT Goat builders here that don't do Facebook. Good for them; you want their feedback.

Funny thing is, I already have a scan of it. I emailed it to Mik as PoP for the birdsmouth mast plans.

My pop up is 6-1/2' x about 14' when open and sleeps 3 comfortably. Since I don't imagine being able to convince my 16-year old son to come along, and his older brother just began school at RPI, I'd have room for another "camper". If there is someone that wants to bring their boat but doesn't have a tent, I can accommodate.

My libation of choice is home-roasted coffee. I will not be consuming much after 7PM! But I would bring enough to supply the troops. The disclaimer is: after tasting fresh roasted coffee, you will not be able to go back to that stale stuff you buy in stores or at DDs.

I'll check in at work on Monday and ensure I can snag that Friday off. If so, I'll book campsite #7 and make the drive.

PS I also have a dutch oven and I'm not afraid to use it.
