Thread: Northeast US Goat Gathering in 2014 - 26 -29 September

Isn't there another NH Goat? I'd have to go searching the archives, but I think there is.

And isn't Al (formerly of Brooklyn) now in Toronto? That wouldn't be too far of a drive.

And, geez, my Karen Ann has been towed well over 10,000 miles over the last year and a half or so... New England is well within driving distance from Michigan.

Consider us in for such a gathering... unless, of course, a bright yellow Goat would stick out like a sore thumb... (Hey, certain folks insist I change the color scheme but that ain't happening!)

Al is in Toronto and has fallen off the map, I tried to email him a few months ago when I was in Toronto and no dice, unfortunately. I want to go sailing with you Al! Where are youuuuuu?!

There is another one in ME, Dana (last name ?) has one. There is one in Portsmouth, NH built by a father/son team, I saw him once (coincidental meeting at Isles of Shoals) and communicated with him a bit, but I don't know what's going on with them presently. (maybe he went to college)

What are these new builds in MA and CT?

And I will say this: A lake in MA would SUCK. No lake sailing. Salt. Distances. Steady winds. Goats need room to roam. I would drive a longer distance for salt.

Bob is right about the drive from Michigan. I have friends who used to do it a the drop of a dime. It's an all-day sucker for sure (especially the farther east into New England you go), but it's doable.

Paulie, my embryonic boat has not been formally named (i.e. introduced to King Neptune) but I think it has spoken to me. However, I like Army Brat as a pre-production code name like the car makers use.

Al Zuger did say he'd try to make the drive from Toronto depending on the location. Which brings me to MY nomination:

It's a little tough to get to from Maine, less so from New Hampshire. 44 sq. mi. of area, so there's room to breathe. Campgrounds (including entire islands) and possibly the largest concentration of miniature golf courses in the universe. Or in the greater Adirondack region anyway. The nightlife there is touristy fun with bars, amusements, mini golf, etc. I haven't been in a long time so I'm not sure how the boating traffic is. But a Herd of Goats is bound to command respect, even among the jet skiers of the world!

There may be camping in the vicinity, but I'm not completely sure*. Callsign might be familiar with a proa builder on WBF named peterchech who plies those waters. Depending on the ambition, Goats could make their way into New York Harbor for the views, or out into the open Atlantic for no reason at all. My hesitation is that I can't say much about parking, launching, or other logistics.

Sorry to have disappeared . It's been to long since I've been out sailing in my beautiful boat, but in the meantime I've been lurking on the forum.

I just read about the SRR Christophe's Blog. So cool, I wish I had been there so much. It looked like an incredible time!

I've been off the map for too long now, with a big move, new job/business, blah blah blah.

I miss sailing my Goat. That said, I finally have a trailer hitch on the new vehicle, and I am hoping to sail it this coming weekend for only the second time in over a year.

Will photo and post after the first voyage!

About a goat meetup I'll be there with bells on. I'm still self employed, so given a bit of time i can make sure to schedule around wherever and whenever the first "Herd of Goats" meetup takes place.

I'm happy to drive up to 1000km in any direction (whats a kilometer you say? Oh yes I am learning to be Canadian!) to sail with my gruff and salty brethren.

I'm a fan of salt water too but a lake in MA seemed central. Open to all suggestions. Where would you all like to explore?

I'm also struck by how many "silent" Goats there are. I obviously need to bump up that map thread. Far too many Goats not on the world map yet.

I just finished building my SUP and I have ordered my GIS plans. I am hoping to get started on her in a couple months. A New England rendezvous sounds great although I have a new baby (#3) coming in October which may push the schedule back. We shall see.

I really think you're going to have a tough time finding a suitable lake in MA. There are not a lot of big lakes in MA, and the reservoir is out of limits for non-motorized craft (I know... crazy!). I think people would be far more willing to drive an extra hour for a great cruising location than driving a slightly shorter distance to sail in circles in some monotonous MA lake. No dig on you, just an opinion.

There is an inexpensive campground near my house. Is Long Island Sound too boring? Too far to drive for the northerners?
