Ok, I think today is moving day for the OozeGooze. It leaves Salem Oregon either today or tomorrow for Texas. It will compete in the Texas 200, then Mike and Jackie Monies are taking it from Texas to Oklahoma. There, Shawn Payment is taking it from Oklahoma to South Carolina, then racing it in the OBX130. From there, it goes back to Oklahoma for the SailOklahoma Boat Festival where Michael Storer will be using it. From there, Mike and Jackie are going to deliver it all the way back across the country where I will pick it up in Port Townsend Washington, then trailer it back to British Columbia.
I hope it gets back home before the water gets hard.
    Rick.

What happened with the mizzen sail? Is this a way to reef it?

Andy said that the mizzen was too large and was rounding the boat up too often. He said the mizzen was about 27sqft, my Hapscut (19.5ft long) has a mizzen of 23sqft while my GIS is at 15sqft.

His "reef" was very clever and the boat sailed well the entire event.

It was one of my worries about the boat for extended strong wind events. No doubt at all that this is a difficult event and one where there is more learning than a few years of sailing in more regular conditions.

The general principle is there ... that when heading downwind it is nice to have sail area at the front of the boat. But going upwind or reaching you need a reasonable balance.

The area is bigger because the centreboard is much further back than the Goat and the mast much further forward.

I'm suspecting there might not have been enough rudder in the water because of the higher transom ... but I want to try some things with Andy and other sailors first.

One thing that is shown is the capability of the hull for this type of sailing - lots of wind from the stern. Andy was very happy with the speed.

We are talking in the background about simple improvements. One of the most obvious might be a balance lug mizzen so it is reefable too.

John, did you participate with your Haps Cut? I can't seem to find much info on this year's event. What am I missing? [Edit: Never mind, I found the Facebook page...]

I hope we'll get more of a review on the OozeGooze, although it's clear that the boat has a very busy schedule.

I think it's a information problem between the easily posted items on Facebook verses managing a website. Some people don't do Facebook and others have gotten busy and don't have time to post.

    Here are the 2 sites:

Wow, that sure looks like a lot of boat for the size. Looks like a whole lot of fun, and what a great paint scheme Definitely some national pride there.
