Default OZRacer MKII versus RV Question

New guy here, been lurking around here for awhile. Please forgive me if this has been answered but I have searched and searched and couldn't find the answer.

I have been interested in building a PDR but seeing the OZRacer looks like a better boat with the purchased plans. At first I was going for the MKII then seen the RV and the simpler construction. It is stated that the MKII has the better performance and faster, more for the sailor. On the other hand the RV is the family boat has more room, but slower. I like the RV's side tanks construction.

So my question is why is there a performance difference, is it due to the RV having a side case dagger board and the MKII is center mounted? So if so would building the RV with a center dagger board bring back the performance of the MKII?

Default OZRacer MKII versus RV Question

I think you've got it right. A competitive sailor might go better around a course with the MK II's hull symmetry. It's also possible that the MK II has a little less wood which could lead to a lighter hull.

In reality, I'm willing to bet that you'd have to try very hard to realize the theoretical advantage. Meanwhile, the RV has simpler construction and more versatile cockpit. It's a no brainer to me.

I have only built the RV and would pass along that I enjoy the extra room and regularly have adult sized passengers that can sit comfortably in the boat. Rick Landrev

Hit enter too quick. What I was going to say was that Rick L. Has made both and, as I understand it, has faired very well in racing both.

Thanks guys for your reply's. I'm sure both boats would work just fine for me.

I was under the impression that the hull shape was the same for both. As far as weight I thought of that too, but thinking there either close or the RV is actually lighter due to less wood parts and glue.

I was hoping that Mr Storer would chime in on the question of the performance difference if due to dagger board location.

Default OZRacer MKII versus RV Question

The hull shape is certainly the same. One of the design goals Michael had with his initial OZRacer was to minimize the number of sheets of ply needed. That influenced the size and shape of the buoyancy tanks, and to some extent the side decks. Once he determined that an additional sheet wouldn't be a barrier to entry, it freed up some design details for the RV, but it also meant a little extra wood in the hull. There's a good chance that one might experience a larger weight penalty with the choice of lumber or finishes or dietary habits. MIK has discussed his thoughts about the theoretical racing advantage of the center case versus the offset slot. It's either somewhere in this forum or on his website. It was a few years ago so it might take some patient searching. It's out there though...
