Prepared for winter...
Yesterday my Beth "YuanFen" was prepared for winter on the wall inside my garage (with a big help of my wife and daughter):
Sails staying on spars and they needs a dust cloth... I have to do it soon!

Perttu sent me an email talking about the first snowfall in Finland!
Maybe the picture of YuanFen on the wall reading for winter makes me think of falling sakura blossoms in Japanese culture.
It is sad, but in a nice way.

Me too. Have I mentioned I'd love to have a Beth?

Howdy Clint,
You have given 420 sailors a shock with the Goat - now you want to pick on Laser sailors with BETH.

(actually they will beat you around a course, but you will make them think on a couple of legs!

Just wondering how Beth would go as a paddler? Maybe some detachable fins on the the ends and a removable seat?

The Goat is much faster round a course than BETH in medium winds. Two up.

Howdy,
Beth as a paddler ...
I always viewed the boat as a residual paddler. It moves along quite well in moderate conditions.
I kneel and heel the boat to the paddle side and steer (ahem) with one buttock.
Some centreboard is needed.
I don't think it is worth making it more of a paddling boat than that.
Could be ok sitting on a gear bag and paddling with a two bladed paddle.
The rig slows it down and always make it tempting to sail as soon as there is much wind.

Yes, I was thinking more along the lines "today there is no wind so I'll take it for a paddle instead....". Leave the rig, centreboard and rudder behind and paddle with a double ended paddle like a kayak.

I thought Beth was the "planing machine" in the "stable of Storer boats" with little equal? Didn't I read that somewhere? I figured the BETH would at least give the Goat a run for her money, what's up?
On another note, I just re-read an old WB "Small Boats" article on the 16/30 Sailing Canoe and that mofo weighs in at 355 pounds and carries 90 square feet. Insane difference between the Beth. What the... is that all about?

No way. That must be wrong. Not even with it's skipper would it weigh that much, even though it does have some extra structure, or the one in WB mag did anyway.
The rudder arrangement on the 16/30s is interesting. Might take some getting used to.
I would think that Beth will be lighter though...

Now that I look more closely, my WB mag says that it's "displacement" is 355 lbs. Maybe that's max capacity. So not weight, but displacement. I can't find a weight, can you?
Beth is definitely lighter, regardless. Some of the metal work for the sliding seat is beefy.

Displacement always confuses me too as I tend to think along the lines of a boat displacing its own weight in water. But its more complicated than that I think so I'm going to have to do some reading up on the subject, particularly as I'm scouting for a nice trailer sailor to build in 2/3 years time.
For the 16/30 canoe, 16kg for the rig and 30kg for the hull seems quite feasible. It would go nicely with its name if it was!
