OK I am now collecting all the stuff I need to start the construction of a PDR using Mik's plans. I know this has taken as long to staart as Midge takes to finish, but you can't rush these thhings....

I have the Oregon and the WRC, the 'pox and filler and all I am looking for is the ply.

I have contacted Caporn in Brookvale and they can get 6mm gaboon and 4mm hoop marine ply for me, but they have to order it in. They have in stock both 4mm and 6mm marine ply made of Kaudamu. I don't know that timber. Should I use it instead? I am tempted because the price is about 60% of the gaboon and hoop, but would it be a false economy?

If you look in the Yellow Pages for ply suppliers in Brookvale, you'll find there are almost a dozen shops around the area. I was in the Bruynzeel shop back in Feb/Mar and they had a huge range of okume/gaboon marine plywood, even small sections of various thicknesses which was ideal for the paddles I was making. So one the one hand, I would be surprised you couldn't get the stuff you're after.

On the other hand, I don't think you particularly need the specific wood mentioned in the plans. I suspect its more ideal to go with okume because of the weight thing. But for a small PDR, this might not be an issue for you. And once you've coated everything in epoxy, you'll have the watertight factor which negates a 'marine ply' label.

Really, this is purely opinion, so I look to be corrected by the professional builders if necessary.

Another opinion is that Hardware and General in Brookvale is one of the best hardware store in Sydney. Go where the real tradies go! (I'll take any discounts due to this blatant plug too Mr MacGregor!)

How old are the plans you have Jeremy? Were you one of the people that got the trial set a couple of years back? If so I can send you some up to date ones. But if you got them recently then all is good. If not tell me the name assigned to the plan and I will check any updates.

First ... the hoop is too small .. it is that crazy OZ metric size!!!!

I would be keen to see marine ply for the bottom panel, but the rest could be good exterior.grade but it is easiest if it is the good old fashioned 8 x 4ft. 2440 x 1220mm

Actually, Boatcraft has been able to deliver at much the same as local prices so they might be worth a call. Their Pacific Maple Marine is ok for the PDR.

If you do want to stretch to gaboon, get it for the bottom panel only.
