Hi Michael,
I'm embarking on my first boat building project shortly and have just put in an order for the quick canoe, the outriggers and the drop in sail from Duck Flat.
Will the sail and outriggers work ok with the quick canoe or will I need to adjust the sizes at all.
Thanks

The outriggers and canoe will work - I would suggest a wooden mast step across the bottom of the boat so the ply doesn't break under the load.
I do have a set of drawings to make the rig a little bigger to suit the Eureka. Would suit the Quick Canoe as well.
Send me an email [email protected]

Sailing the Quick Canoe solo (modified prototype)
Here are a couple of video clips and a photo of the Quick Canoe (solo-prototype) sailing with MIK's Drop-In Sailing Rig. Wind was Force 3 to 4 (mostly 3).
Sailing at Lake Moomaw - a set on Flickr
The solo prototype has 22 inch beam at the chines, 28 inches maximum at the gunwales. There are no longer any skegs...only a 3/4 inch keel.
Sailing it is a lot like riding a bicycle. It's all about leaning and dynamics. There is a fair bit of useful secondary stability in the hull. (Haven't dumped yet).
(Designer's note - the boat that Paul built is very much a prototype and is not similar in handling to the standard Quick Canoe - which is much more stable)Last edited by Boatmik; 2nd May 2010 at 11:03 AM.

Thanks Paul,
I'm new to boat building and new to sailing I've only ever sailed hobie cats on holidays and loved them. I'm looking forward to mucking around in a small multi purpose boat.

Perttu in Finland is at it again!
We are in late autumn here in OZ, but he has used a wonderful Finnish spring day to head off down a river in his "Quick Canoe".
I placed the seats 19cm+padding from bottom and for us they are perfeckt now.
We just came paddling from river haapajoki. Well we found that we aren´t pros, but
it was fun and canoe was perfeckt. It was light to carry over obstacles and easy to paddle. We hit once into rock, but there came barely no damage att all.
I am glad that we don´t have alligators here!
here some photos :
Haapajoki - a set on Flickr
and some videos : (the first is little over long and you can see that we are novice paddlers in the end)

Hello,
Some very interesting reading (and good video's) on Duckworks on the 155-solo-prototype:
Duckworks - Canoe - William Henry Harrison
This really shows the skills of an canoeing expert! I was amazed what he could do with this prototype. As I understand it, the boat is very tippy and was built for testing and working out various ideas only.
Best wishes,
Joost

That is correct the William Henry Harrison is almost six inches narrower than the one in the plans and quite tippy.
Paul is a very good canoeist so can handle it OK. Or handle it more than OK. I must admit to being very surprised to see he was game to sail it too!
But in the clips on the Duckworks site it it Paul's son Eli - who has been an olympic reserve for whitewater events. His son Eli is just about unbelievable in a canoe - in the rapids shots he takes it to a level I can barely imagine. I would love to pay to go to one of his workshops in the USA.

Today I ordered my ply for the boat(s) I/we are building the week after next.
I'll pick it up in Cairns Monday arvo.
Enough for a Quick canoe & a PDRacer.
PJ (Still Smilin') arrives next Friday.
I am taking the week off to build a quick canoe & see if we can make a start on a duck.Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

Couple of mods for the Quick Canoe ... one is to put the inwale on the outside and the gunwale on the inside. It give a bit more meat for the centre spreader to glue to.
The other is that while some have found the stability Ok with seats in the drawn position, Perttu did find it a bit twitchy as Perttu, a novice canoeist and moved them down about 40mm. And then found it OK.
If you are a canoe officianado or sometimes paddle from a kneeling position (as the good guys often do) I don't think there will be problems.
I will be putting this in the plan.
Best wishes

Hi Cliff .... just told you the changes! That's it. They will migrate into the plan shortly with just about those words around them - ie that experienced canoeist will probably find little problem etc etc.

The plans still don't appear on the Duck Flat website. Any chance of giving them a twist of their tail to get them available from the Aussie supplier (I dunno why, but I prefer to buy from the Aussie outfit rather than the US guys)?
Cheers
Jeremy

They have them but haven't put them up on the net. Give Di a call 08 8391 3988 or email
info@duckflatwoodenboats to tee it up and they will email them to you.
Best wishes
