Howdy,
Speaking to Paul Helbert who will be building the first one, he said that most solo travellers will paddle full length boats rather than short ones. So the one above is the same length as the first one (more or less) so will come out of three sheets. Paul is co-incidentally building of thinner plywood with either thin glass on the outside or some doubling ribs made of ply on the inside to brace the floor.
I will be drawing up a smaller boat to squeeze on two sheets as well. I have been few several iterations of this to try and get it fit on the sheets.
I am up to hull model H and detail drawing C trying to get the bugger to fit. It will work but end up being just a bit longer than the Wee Lassie's 10.5ft.

A Duct Tape Story
As this thread owes a lot to duct tape, I thought I'd post this item here, on how duct tape got this fellow out of a scrape.
During a private "fly-in" fishing excursion in the Alaskan wilderness, the chartered pilot and fishermen left a cooler and bait in the plane.
And a bear smelled it. This is what he did to the plane.
The pilot used his radio and had another pilot bring him 2 new tires, 3 cases of duct tape, and a supply of sheet plastic.
He patched the plane together, and FLEW IT HOME!

Duckworks magazine featured the Quick Canoe in a nice article. It can be found here.

Great build photos on flickr. I was on board as soon as I saw the duct tape - I know I can do duct tape - bought the plans last week, just waiting for better weather here in TX to build. Rick - have you finalized the seat location for solo paddling?

Hi Dave;
The front seat location is tantilizingly close to what MIK had specified, and I paddle solo kneeling from the front seat position facing the back of the boat. Because the ends are symetrical, there is no performance difference paddling forwards or backwards. So I rest my buttocks against the front seat, kneel on the bottom of the canoe and face backwards. (I use a spare lifejacket to kneel on). This is kind of a Canadian way of paddling, but it is effective because you can brace your knees against the sides which gives good leverage for J-stroke paddling.

Yes they are. I have seen the finished plans, and they are very comprehensive. They explain everything in great detail, have useable pictures and drawings, and are great value for the measly $30.00 that MIK charges for them. I have payed way more to get way less from other designers.
The rank amateur can follow the plans like a cake recipe and have great results quickly. The seasoned boatbuilder can use them as a guide, and economize time by using more sophisticated methods, and both boats will end up looking exactly the same.

One small mod for the canoe. It will be in the next plan version which my agents will have shortly.
Basically it is a doubler for the skeg/keel at the ends where it is fastened. I was worried about the chance that the skeg could be hit hard from the side and the fastenings would rip out of the bottom making the boat leak.
These doublers mean that the bottom will be 12mm thick (1/2") just where needed - big enough for the hull of a 30ft offshore boat - and will distribute any loads into the hull.
Best wishes
Michael
