The Register for Goat Island Skiff
Hey all
I need you to alpha-test my new register for our boats
So far is it only the creation part that there is done.
I would like to know if there is some kind of data that i have missed.
I also need 1 or 2 that would be admin on the site. The reason for that is when a user register he's boat then an admin should approve it before it would appear on the page. The reason for this is to keep the site clean for spam etc.
I also need 1 person from each country where there is a gis located that would like to translate from english.
And you are welcome to come with criticism, just not about the layout, im a developer not designer
ohh, and then the link
http://www.goatislandskiff.dk/
I hope you like what i have started!
Best Regards
Bjarne Pedersen

Good concept Bjarne. Mind you, I type "Adelaide" into the search box and it winds up with the same map Just teasing, I know this is just a concept page
How about including the Rowing Skiff in the register as well ... well, maintain a seperate register next to the GIS. I suggest this because the Rowing Skiff really is a sister boat to the GIS - you can claim that the Goat is a sailing version of the Skiff or the Skiff is a rowing version of the Goat, and so keeping the evil sisters together makes some sort of sense (and we don't have to create another site ) I'm not suggesting we include the whole range of Storer designs.
Having more than one admin is a good idea - it lowers the work load for one person and removes the reliance on one person. An example of this is the David Payne Yahoo group that was set up and run by a very enthusiastic gent who died suddenly leaving the group stranded as no-one else has admin powers.
As for content, bung up what YOU want to see and then let it grow.
I think the map is a great idea if it shows the location of all boats registered.
A gallery, maybe organised so each individual boat has its own folder - this can be done easily by the owner of that gallery creating it on something like Flickr or Photobucket and then your website providing a link to that gallery though hosting one or two photos on your site would be a good move to in case the external gallery disappears.
I don't know that you want to go the extent of creating a forum but a yahoo email group might be a good idea - this forum works for the job it does but an email group gives somewhere for simple chatter.
You could be really really mean and put in an 'Ask Mik' button
Actually, a link to this forum is probably all that's needed.
Hmm, we could create a Mythology of the Goat complete with a complete set of gods such as 'Bruce, the god of stuff ups'
Onya mate.

What do you think about that ?
Skiff's only or them all ??

The thinking behind an email group is that it allows a lot of trivial type posts, or posts that only have a short term relevance.
For examples:
- you're going sailing this weekend so you put a note on the list saying so and inviting others to join you.
- local television is having a spot on the GIS tonight and you'd like to notify anyone who can receive the channel
- you had a really good day in your Goat and just wanted to brag about it
A forum could do this too and there is a lot of trivia here on the Woodies forum, but a forum is open to all whereas an email group is a little more private and so you can talk about stuff you'd like to keep 'within the family'.
It's just a suggestion - what do others think?

Regarding the uploading of photos - yes, it can be done but someone has to provide the space for them. Be ambitious and plan for this register to be HUGE because lots and lots of people are building Goats and Skiffs - in those circumstances, you could easily find yourself running out of space unless you limit photos to only one or two per boat.
On the question of Goat and Skiff vs all of Mik's designs - it's really a matter of 'how much work do you want to make for yourself'. An overall register is a good idea but if you include too many popular models, you may find yourself running out of room and energy.
It's good to think big, but it's also good to plan big and then cut back your ideas to something you can manage.
Have you ever operated a website Bjarne? It's relentless. You have to be at it all the time. Be very very careful about making work for yourself.

It hosted on my own server and i have atm 1.5TB HDD and can always buy some more, so space is not a issue
I have been developing websits for app. 10 year now, so yes, i know what kind of work there is in a website. So by now i know how to make a website so i dont create too much work for myself.
We must dicuss the email group later, its not that important atm.

Bjarne,
Looking at that page - I see no data for any boats. Maybe it's temporarily not showing because you're developing at the moment?
Could you post your db layout, maybe that will help.
About pictures... maybe allow for one picture and a thumbnail of that to use in any listings output. It doesn't really help the community to be a duplicate repository for pictures that are already posted somewhere else.
A link to the owner/builders webpage or photo album would be v.good.
? maybe Lat/Lon for feeding into Google Earth?
In the db... a field for a set of fixed categories (to make a ddlb to be selected by user) for each design would allow user seach for just entries of a specific design might be useful.
In the end, this will become a nice application.
Cheers,

So far its only the creation of the boat that is complete. I have not developed the part where you can see the boat that have been created. It will come
It's possible too upload all the photos that you want too upload.
You cant miss the part where you out in your address in the first page by Google Map ?
There is a link field.

I like the Google Map feature.
I agree with Tom about the pictures feature:

A link to the owner/builders webpage or photo album would be v.good.
Are we going to assign hull/sail numbers?
Thanks for the work you are doing with this, Bjarne.

Regarding the photo's then its up to the user how many photo's he wanna post on the website.
If we gonna use the email group thing then we need too find out a good way to do it.
There is a boat no fields, how we gonna use it is up to the community. My boat no is GIS 1 - so far its the first one in Denmark.
And i do still need 1-2 admin and some persons that would translate the site from english to there native language.

It's a great start, Maximus. I tried to "create a boat" and got a few error messages. After dealing with what I could I was left with "web-site is not in correct format."
Also, when we upload our GISs we may or may not know the hull numbers so why not make that optional instead of required? The "Cosmos Mariner,"My Goat Island Skiff

The message, in red font, reads "the web-site is not in the correct format."
I uploaded two small pictures, one is 17.3Kb and the other is 22.4KB. That's the size after uploading. The original sizes were different, one was smaller (2.71KB) and the other was larger (626KB). That makes no sense to me--I hope you understand it better. The "Cosmos Mariner,"My Goat Island Skiff
