Actually, the more I ponder it, the more I think R41 tries to be too many things.
Some of those things seem to be mutually exclusive.
eg dry-sailing & dry-sleeping cruiser, vs long, thin, light, fast club racer.
It might be possible to hit on some magic combination of numbers which allow it
to do both well, but is it worth the effort? In fact, as MIK has alluded, at
this point in time, GIS does both better.

From a purely practical point of view, OozeGooze would seem to be the better line
of development for the multi-day solo cruising boat. Retains lightness &
relatively small volume. Cost is top speed, but if cruising/touring, you want
to be able to relax to enjoy the view. I do anyway.

Maybe it would be best if R41 abandon the keep dry requirement, and be redeveloped
as a competitive Raid boat and mixed fleet racer. This would allow the
deal-breaking inability to re-board to be eliminated, and give MIK more freedom
to design for performance under sail & oar. Dry sleeping can be had on-shore.
I think R41 could be made to excel in this role - fitting in between the GIS
& Beth. However, such a boat is not the boat for me.

A crying shame there isn't more footage like this.
It has been a stimulating challenge thinking through the various dynamics.
Hopefully some of the ideas put forward will be useful some day to someone.
But for me, losing Brian in the process has soured the experience.
    regards
    AJ

    Howdy,

Looks like one of my wishes is coming true.

I have been in contact with Bryan Cull who built the other RAID41 prototype. It looks like we will team sail it in this year's TEXAS200.

This means that both of us will have time to sail singlehanded (the other getting lifts on other boats) and also double handling it.

Will be great to see what we find out.

If the boat is bad we will have some idea after (or maybe during) the event.

Either way we will learn something.

That's great news, MIK. And thanks for re-posting that video. That is a very slippery hull right there. It barely disturbs the water as it moves along.

I'm guessing the wind was around 5 MPH gusting to 8 or 9?

Good news indeed that the Raid41 will sail the TX200.

    John,

So there are two storerboats in the Texas200. Nice!

Probably a shade under both of your estimates Archie. I doubt it was getting up to 10 except when I did one sail to the other side of the lake and got a couple of nice gusts going and coming. The boat didn't have a tiller extension at the time so I couldn't really push it.

    MIK
