    Default new tender for WD

    Hi guys, looking at building a new tender for the big boat and leave it in the dingy rack at Pittwater. Looking at Michaels handy punt. The council reckon that the length of boat must be 2.5 M but there are plenyty of 3m tenders there all ready so that is what I am looking for. I only have a 2hp honda outboard at the moment but if my grown up kids and mates take up the challenge they may get a bigger one (outbaord that is).
    So now to the questions:
    1. can the handy punt be cut down to 9 and a bit feet
    2. will the 2 hp push it around the moorings (usually pretty sheltered)
    3. can you row it (just to mooring and back)
    4. can I fit the sail, centre board and rudder of the auk (which is nearly finished) and make it sail a bit ( just to the pub and back).
    5. should I look for some other design.

    Howdy,

    The punt is set up as a planing hullshape with the bottom of the boat going back horizontal to the transom. This means it will drag its transom deep at low speeds. Very inefficient.

    You could swing the bottom up to the surface by recutting the side panels. This would be better at low speed for the little outboard and for sailing.

    But it won't be much of a sailing boat.

    Another way might be an adaptation of the OzRacer. Leave the boat the same from bow to deepest point then stretch the back to give you the length you want. This will keep the centreboard and sail in the right positions relative to each other.

    If you did long side tanks like the proposed OZ mk3 you could put a seat rail along the insde face of the buoyancy tank so you could drop in seats to wherever they were needed.

    It is closer to being a good solution than the punt.

    Hope this helps - you would get a much better sailing boat and low speed boat.

    Thanks for the advice Micheal, it all make sense. Looking through this forum and the PD site I have noticed some of these litle boats have lug rigs. Do you rekon that the lug of the Auk would work on a stetched PD.
    I have been trying to get our cruising club to build a couple of the PD's just for fun, this may be the start.

    Howdy Ian,

    The main thing is that if the centre of the Auk Rig is in the right position relative to the centreboard or leeboard of the PDR ... then it will all work OK.

    I can help with diagrams if that helps. However the downside of that route is that you end up with two sailing boats and only one rig .. so which one gets the rig when you decide to sell one of them?

    The rig of the OzRacer includes a triangular sprit boom rig, but there is a lug option too.

    There are instructions for a polytarp sail, which will cost very little. Then both boats will have a rig.
