Default Texas 200 RAID and Wooden Boat Show at Mystic CT - Storerboats

    Howdy,

I have been in deep discussion with my American Agent, Chuck Leinweber and it looks like I will be in the USA for the TEXAS 200 Event this year 2011.
    June 13 -18
    The Texas 200

Actually not "looks like", but excepting real hell or high water, I will be there.

It would be fantastic if a bunch of storerboats were there too - a nice opportunity to put faces to names. When I was in the USA the year before last I met a lot of people who I had been talking with and was great to find that the internet friendships were the same as the real life friendships.

The other event I am going to be a part of is the family boatbuilding event at The WoodenBoat Show held June 24-26 at Mystic Seaport.
The WoodenBoat Show (see the index at the top for "Family Boatbuilding")

    Best wishes
    Michael

Are you going to sail the texas 200? Hmmm, which boat would you ideally use?

    Default Mystic G2G?

MIK, I'd like to echo the call for Storerboat Sailors of the US Northeast (SSUSNE?) to consider converging on Mystic in June.

In another thread, Paulie (of CT) has stated that he will display his GIS in the "I Built it Myself" exhibition and I sort of assume that CCBB (Clint Chase of ME) will attend the event in one capacity or another. Can we cajole others to make the trek? I don't suppose it will be a good venue for the boats themselves to converge (excepting Paulie's) but it could be a decent opportunity for a land-locked messabout--or G2G in internet forum speak.

Since the location is a fair drive for for most of us, it makes an overnight stay almost a necessity. If there is interest, I could make lodging reservations at a discount in nearby Groton. It would be a single room for multiple adults, but it would be more posh than camping aboard a little wooden boat.

I will attend. Anyone else? Should I book a room?

    Howdy Dave,

Thanks for mentioning the "Built it myself" category. There may be other ways to participate in the event too.

Clint has organised to have his Goat on display and near the water. So, so far we have Clints and Paulie's Goats plus all the boats that are built in the Family Boatbuilding classes. So a reasonable storerboat presence already.

I will be running the boatbuilding classes for the Quick Canoe Electric during the day along with John Owen who makes the kits for the Quick Canoes and the Texas PDR, and Chuck from Duckworks.

    So will be pretty interesting.

Anyone who digs out more information about participation in general is very welcome to post it here - or any questions or grand plans.

    Mik,

Good to hear you'll be back for another visit to the States. I'm looking at the calender to see if I can make it down to the Texas 200. My GIS won't be ready so I if I can make it I may seek a ride with someone as crew. Or, I may only be able to make to visit with everyone at the finish. One way or the other I'll see what I can do about being on the Gulf coast of Texas in mid-June.

    Hi Nick,

In a way it is non competing. I will be there and be great if I could fish up a storerboat to sail. But will be along in some capacity if that is not possible.

    Hi MIK;

If Andyrew is heading to Texas by car, I could drop off the boat I am working on to his place, and you could use that for the event. Might be comfy!

Maybe I am biased, but I think it would be the perfect vehicle for such an expedition.
I'll even paint it red and white, because red boats are faster! LOL!

I am filling out the paperwork to bring my GIS to Mystic right now. That means I will finally have to finish it. Might have to take some days off work for that.

The hull needs one more coat of paint and several of varnish. And some metal bits. Foils are glassed. Rudder stock and tiller are ready to glue up. Spars and oars are, um, er, well, still in "flat pack" state.

But even if worse comes to worst, I'll be there with the finished hull and some borrowed oars. Embarrassing, yes, but the boat will float and it will move. Could be worse.

In other news, I contacted the other local GIS builder/owner, Ned Flanagan. He will be happy to bring his Goat to Mystic but probably won't spend all three days there, so he won't be showing it in IBIM.

Ned wants to know if there is one day when other Storer boats (Goats or not) will be there and he can add his to the group. Is any day preferred by the other locals? By Mik?

Where are you in CT? I grew up in Essex, I bring the boat there periodically and cruise the River and go into the Sound. Where's Ned?

There's a small chance my boat might be at Mystic too, but I and the boat will not be available to sail.

The reason I ask geographic questions is because maybe we could beach cruise one day if I bring it back down this year. Also Ned Flanagan rings one heck of a bell....

You got any pictures of your Goat!?
