I was going to make a wise ass remark about the fenders being a jibe recovery flotation system. Does it still have bite if they really are a jibe recovery flotation system? )
Nervous jibing out in the ocean the other day when the waves picked up, but I remembered Miks post about simply balancing for balance as needed. No problemo.
Separate and completely unrelated - It's interesting as you roll over a broadside swell on a beam reach, how as the mast head shifts towards the wind, the apparent wind seems to move off a point or two (ahead a point or two). I would have guessed it was the other way around, (and been wrong.)

Thanks for those details, John.
For the type of sailing I'm likely to do it sounds like something I don't need. The "Cosmos Mariner,"My Goat Island Skiff

These lashing are from the Californian, which is the State of California's official Tall Ship. She is replica of the 1847 Revenue Cutter C.W. Lawrence.
So Mik does take some of his ideas from traditional boats. I did not know he was that old.
I used this lashing on my Goat.

John, that is an amazingly timely post! Yesterday evening, I was Googling sail lashings in an attempt to get an idea of what sorts of cool lashing schemes are out there. Did not find as many references as I thought I would. Your pic is by far the best demo of that tidy lashing technique.

How does one begin and end this type of lash?

With a sliding bowline at the beginning and a few half hitches at the end.
Either that or use zip-ties (Not very classy but it worked on my ozracer)Visit My GIS Blog at. . .

GIR goes sailing
I have posted another sailing video: It is long at 13 minutes.
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTQDLR9GBws]‪Goat Island Skiff - named GIR‬‏ - YouTube[/ame]
There are 2 items to look for.
Item 1: Mik taught me to spread the crew weight out into opposite corners of the boat to help stablize it while sailing downwind. My wife and I finally do this after rolling to windward a few times. So, much more stable this way.
Item 2: We backed into the dock using just the mizzen. See if we did ok or not.

WOW John, you guys are really smoking along, surfing the waves. Thanks for passing on MIK's tip. I will need it. Oh, and the backing up is just plain impressive.

Was great to see the long version of the sail and seeing GIR travel around. John, What about coming to Maine for the Small Reach Regatta? They are setting dates for 2012 now. It may not be possible for me to go because of work, but I always try to work it out.
Cheers

My wife and I fully intend to be at the Small Reach Regatta next summer. With GIR in the pack, it will be a big old Goat-fest.

Depending on the dates (early July wouldn't work for me), I'd like to attend, too.
Any idea when the dates will be announced?Building Gardens of Fenwick, a Welsford Parthfinder
