The Ultimate Cruising PDR
This has got to be the ultimate in cruising PDRs.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pdrace...tart=1&dir=asc
the foils, sail and framework are clearly all MIK.
The rest of it is either madness or genius.
Whichever, I reckon it's brilliant!!
Note the Quick Canoe going together alongside it too.
cheers

It occurs to me that not everyone wants, or is able to, join the PDR forum.
I thought the snowdrift in the background of one pic looked familiar.
It's our friend Perttu. he writes:

Maby in long Finish winter I could make somekind plans if someone is interested
- but for free. The good performance baced to Storer Ozpdracer sails and foils,
whitch I loaned from my Ozpdracer. So I donīt know is it fair play to make plans
that use someone else designed parts and show plase where to put them?
Or I just leave those parts open for bulder to choose how to make them?

Some pics. He built a QC & a kayak in the time he built the PDR, all in a single
car garage. Impressive stuff, with some very clever ideas.

Well I'm impressed.
Sits very well in the water I thought after reading the first post it might be bow down but the rowing shot shows the trim looking good.Mike

We have lost some posts here sadly ... but what I wanted to say is I REALLY like the structure.
I asked Perttu what he does for a living.
He is a wood engineer - and it shows. There is no more structure here than you really need - a real masterwork.
It uses all the spars, foils and rudderbox stuff from the OZ he built last year.
The only thing I would consider to change is to move the hatch into the cabin a little bit more towards the middle or make it a little narrower. If the boat ends up on its side the cabin will fill unless he has the hatch closed. But if the edge of the hatch was a 300mm toward the centre of the boat it would be perfect.
I think it is a great concept. There is talk of developing the Goose class for distance eventing - a 12ft version of the PDR. Imagine how much space a Perttu boat of that concept would have!

MIK it's good to have you verify the mysterious disappearances. Was beginning to wonder if I'm having little strokes! )

I thought of the hatch location too.
Centering it would complicate its shape as it slides both sides of the mast.
Would probably reduce the available length of travel due to the mast cut-out
needing to remain over solid deck when closed. Which would likely make access
for full-sized people more difficult, out of proportion to the percentage of travel
lost.
At a guess...

It looks just right. Really nice.
Perhaps the two of you might consider releasing the design if trials go well and she proves successful in meeting her design brief.

Or could use storm boards instead of a normal hatch.
Some of the PDR people are looking at doing a range of events and "trails" for simple expeditioning boats. They might be using the 50% longer Goose as the basis.
So we are talking about having a minimum rocker limit only so if people want to make a more complex boat they can still make it float and move nicely.
Perttu's boat expanded out 50% in length would be like a palace. A LOW palace, but the space would be very good.

Wow
Hi to all.
Mik send me the link to this forum and talk to that boat. I live in Finland and we have long and dark winters. So I have time to realize "stupid" ideas. My girlfren left 4 weeks to Africa and I said : I will make one kayak.. Well I made 1 canoe 1 kayak and that pd+ planningwork. ( actually I spend the hole winter in my grans garage ).
I like boats that you can use - you dont have too much money and building time in them so if there came some damage itīs not too serious - you can always make another boat.
I have only once tested that boat and then it worked good. Itīs really light and "suprisingly roomy" -am I honestly?
In middle of August I am goin't to go sailin it couple days in Linnansaari national park.
Excursion map - Metshallitus
I am thinking the plans with Mik - there are some issues like your have notised - the hatch is the biggest and some material optimising and so on... lets see.
Thanks for interest - feel free to send mail or guestions.
