    Default Viola Sailing Canoe Experiment.

Joost has been building this in semi secret. Aim is something much lighter and more portable than a Laser. A very minimal sailing canoe with not a scrap of extra junk. Completely stripped ... everything minimal.

    It works!

Well, Viola is well and truly launched and the plans are finalised.

Daniel Caselli put together Joost and Viola's videos to make this ...

Plans are up at Duckworks and Boatcraft Pacific.

Very nice Mic, also pleasing to see some shapes in the topsides. Could the smaller rigs use a windsurfer sail?

After reading the Safety section of your Viola build manual, I have decided to make this my 2nd project leading into retirement. I will build a paddle for her first. But before that I need to decide on a name for her.

    So many options: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viola_tricolor
    I may go with "Jump".

We are currently preparing a video from the five day trip that Joost did with three other boats.

They had bridges to go under. As you do in the Netherlands.

Joost routinely stands up to lift the mast out and down while the Viola is floating.

Try that in the normal symmetrical canoe. Which is why I refer to this boat as a hybrid between a canoe planform and a dinghy shape.

POsted the video below this post.

    Thanks PAR!

We worked hard to get some shape in there ... the low upper chine that reduces the twist required from the bilge panel did mean what could be a very boring topside. But I think the solution is OK to good. Lots of people really like the appearance - I think a bit of a view of the interior of the sailing Viola does look very nice indeed.

Windsurf rigs have the problem of mast stiffness and strength particularly if somebody is hiking hard. The alloy spars seem to cost out around 200 bucks which is probably cheaper than wood for many countries.

Default video of Viola 14 sailing canoe on tour

    Howdy,

Here is the video of the 5 day trip. You can see Joost standing in the floating boat pulling the mast out.

There was little performance difference between the two sailing canoes. We did the sails for both.

The Viola feels very stable and secure. And the Artemis is a bit faster paddling (not a lot) but requires a hiking plank to hold the boat up so is a bit less secure sailing.

they just waited for the others
