    Default wood use question

just a quick question that I am sure has been answered a million times, browsing the local Bunnings I noticed a large assortment of Tasmanian Oak and Maranti, are either of these woods a useable choice in boatbuilding?

    G'day Charley
Both are suitable paticularly when using epoxy. Tassie Oak is a good medium density hardwood, which glues and machines well without blunting tools. It is also rot resistant. The meranti they've got varies a bit as it's not just the one species. The darker red stuff is heavier, stronger and more rot resistant, the paler stuff tends to be lighter, rot resistance shouldn't be a problem if sealed in epoxy.
The marine ply bunnings sells is of reasonable quality made with batu (a yellowish Indonesian hardwood) meets the BS1088 standard but is quite heavy. 3-4kg heavier than Gabon/Okume per 6mm sheet.
The batu is also available in decking lengths (19mmx89mm 5.1m ~$24)which when ripped work well for gunwales/skegs if you want to avoid scarfing.

    Cheers Dan
