Default New yawl rigged GIS in France, Pays Basque: Ahuntza

    Hi
The wood I bought a kit from Icarai last year.
Waiting for an extension to my small house in Le Teich, Bassin d'Arcachon, close to Bordeaux and its wine castles.
But things went so slow that I decided to call the Escumayres Talasta for help.
They are a tribe of nice guys in an associative building site in Pays Basque, close to Bayonne, about 200km´south from Arcachon.
I met them last year, when invited to share a Sail&Oars navigation on Leon's Lake, with my beautiful and faithful Azalaï, à SWALLOWBOATS Matt Newland's great design.
That's when I made up my mind and decided to build her there, under control of Philippe Saint Arroman their naval carpenter.
Here is the draft of the blog following building process of my yawl rigged GIS, whose name will be "Ahuntza", meaning "the goat" in basco language:

    http://ahuntz.wordpress.com

I choosed to build the yawl version since I had a look to the great John Goodman's youtube videos sailing his GIS in Texas200.

I should translate it in english ASAP.

    Waiting for your comments !

    D'Jack

Looks great, and what a nice idea to build together with other people building different boats. Must speed up the process immensely. Looking forward to seeing your progress with your goat.

Thank you Pontus, I do need encouragement !

Just back from 2 days there, sanding and making yards of epoxy joints (joint congé, in french).
But that is part of the game, I know.

I have a few questions to ask, but as far as I am quite a newbie in forums, I dont know when starting or not a new post...

First, I am looking for the detailed plan of the mizzen sail.

I asked Michael Storer, but he might be very busy, I expect.
And, who knows how to directly connect with John Godman?

    Good luck finding your eggs!

Hang in there D'Jack. We all started somewhere. Do not hold back on questions. The folks here can hardly wait to help each other out. Wonderful bunch from all over the world. Just shows how politics slows us all down. When we can just relate to each other we get along fine.

Easiest way to get in contact with both John and Mik is through the Goat Island Skiff Facebook group. It's (maybe unfortunately as some people avoid Fb like the plague) where the most action is nowadays. At the moment the group have 299 members, so you have the chance to become member number 300! (No prize). Mik is logged on to F-book almost everyday and John post every now and then.

    Thanks for helping D'Jack everyone.

I sent him the required info plus some of the other tips (like the uneven reefing sizes) that we have all found useful.

    Best wishes
    MIK

(D'Jack, I hope you received all that via email!)

Thank you ScooterPontus & all for your encouragements!
FB might not be a real plague, but certainly time consuming. And I want to be logged on true life as well
But ok I'll try my best and maybe as the 300th !
the other point is there are so many informations concerning the GIS but scatered in so many places on the web that it is already a full job when you just want to stay tuned...
and I'm already afraid I might not be on the starting line at next Venice Lagoon Velaraid, 10-15th of june.
hoping then to at least be able to join their 50 miles raid in july, a small Texas 200!

    Many Thanks for helping me!

yes, thank you for the files I did received.

My sailmaker, Voiles Bassin, suggested nearly the same changes to the reefing.
the sails (main & mizzen) should be made with narrow widths (laizes, in french)

The narrow width cloth will look nicely traditional. Sounds like a thoughtful sailmaker.
