I stopped wearing mine. I kept thinking someone was following me. It was my own footsteps that I hadn't heard for decades.

If you think your own footsteps are following you, it may be time for a chat to the nice man with the comfortable couch

I had been working testing and bring up process control systems for GE. My normal shift was evenings or 3PM to Midnight. The foreman was really irritated with me and moved me to graveyards, Midnight to 8AM. One of my new co-workers was wearing ear plugs for hearing protection. I thought what the heck and tried a pair for myself.

The first night I wore the ear plugs I drove home with them in my ears. Upon entering the house with everyone sleeping I took the ear plugs out and put them on the counter. Then I set about trying to make breakfast. With every step I took there was this "shssss, shssss" sound. I was really concerned about the strange sound until I realized that is was my legs rubbing together with every step. I had never heard the sound before. Right then and there I decided ear protection at automobile races, in computer rooms, in the shop and in any loud environment is mandatory.

My sentiments exactly. Three scenarios come to mind. a) head in the cupboard, b) walking away and telling me something, and, c) looking out of the window of the car whilst yakking.
