Actually we have always referred to the kids or friends of our children, that grew up in and around our home as out "Other Kids". And yes, it would have been an honor to be able to call him a son.

They were working on that back when I was at the national measurement laboratory. The kilo was the last artifact. The idea was to make a perfectly spherical sphere of silica if I recall determine the number of molecules and calculate the mass from there. We measured stuff to 7 places routinely and could get 9 or better with a bit of effort, but even at that lab doing that was tricky stuff.
