They were working on that back when I was at the national measurement laboratory. The kilo was the last artifact. The idea was to make a perfectly spherical sphere of silica if I recall determine the number of molecules and calculate the mass from there. We measured stuff to 7 places routinely and could get 9 or better with a bit of effort, but even at that lab doing that was tricky stuff.
