    Default 4 Axis enquiry

    Hi,
    Have been looking at some of the builds and comments on here, some excellent machines and knowledgable people here, so I thought I would ask. I'm looking at getting a 4 axis machine similar to this one,
    4 Axis 3D CNC Milling Machine Router Drill Wood Cutting Engraving Engraver 3020 | eBay
    What I'm hoping to do with it, is to cut a groove 6mm wide X 5mm deep on a diagonal, half way across a piece of round hardwood (usually)
    60 - 120mm diameter and 19 - 45mm wide, would this machine have suitable travel, as the Z travel is only 45 mm (200（X）mm*300（Y）mm*45（Z), or would I be better to find a unit that has a larger Z travel? Also would the power be sufficient to do this with little effort?
    Apart from a computer to run it, would I require anything else, I don't need a chuck on the 4th axis, they will be supported on a mandrel.
    Have Autocad 2000 and Inventor (of similar vintage) drawing programs.

    you may need to do it with more than one pass, this is primarily and engraver not a full blown router. If you could mount a small trimming router (markita) it may work ok.

    Next size up machine is the 6040 which, while double the size in X and Y dimensions, only gives 70mm or so of Z travel.
    The 6040 will take a larger spindle (mine came with a 800W water cooled unit) but a Makita RT0701 trimmer will fit it.

    Spindle speed: 300 ~ 8000 rpm ..... not really useful for woodworking. Even large panel raising bits should be run at about 12k, a 6mm bit for your groove should be spinning at 24-30k
