Greg,
I had used helical couplers on my Y & Z, but found that my Z coupling had broken just with a bit of up and down with the portable drill. So I thought that I should go for a coupling with a bit more "guts"! My shaft alignment is minutely out, which may have caused the broken coupling. I can fix that, but the Oldham style coupling should account for that mis-alignment anyway. I have found the Oldham coupling on the TEA website ... any other suggestions?
Cheers,

Always a good idea to get the alignment as close as possible.
Peter has a couple of sizes. Was the one that failed small?
I happen to have a 1/4 by 1/4 lovejoy sitting on my desk. Do you want me to put it in the post?

Greg,
Thanks for the offer, much appreciated. But I am connecting the 1/4" motor shaft to an 8mm ballscrew end, so would need two different hubs (I think!).

That is not an issue. I just put it in the lathe and take it out to 8mm.

Spindle Wiring Question
With my 1.5kw air cooled spindle only 3 wires actually connect to the spindle so the 4th wire is presumably an earth. I am proposing to connect this to the Z axis plate, but as this is just a general earth, does it have to be shielded? If not then I assume that I could just buy 3 core shielded for the spindle and run the earth as a separate wire back to the main earthing point. Would the shielding be suitable as the earth connection?
Help,

I wouldn't recommend using shielding as the earthing. Your better option is to run a dedicated earth cable to the metal parts of the cnc including your z axis. As long as everything is metals and not insulated from each other it will save you having to buy 4 core cable and probably safer.
Just an opinion though.

Alan,
is that bought cable tray or did you make it using the files from the zone that was linked from this site a couple of months ago.
If bought - how much and where from please, but this also goes for others please for suppliers
PS - really nice work and keep up the progress. I know how hard it is to get a couple of hours straight running on a project - consecutively that is.

Hhi Alan,
The signature series tray support.
What is the motif?
This level of detail does make a difference and makes the machine look more professional.Cheers,

My logo is a stylised tree (or if you look at it after a couple of chardonays, it could be a leaf) ... no specific concept ... I just liked it!!
As far as the cable chain is concerned, Geoff got it in one ... Chai from Linear Motion bearings. I can't remember the price and have hidden all of my invoices because I didn't want to know how much I had spent on my 'modest price table', at least that it what I originally called it when I started out!!!

Just so that people don't think that my build has come to a complete stop, I have posted a couple of times to other threads ... such as ...
https://www.woodworkforums.com/showpo...7&postcount=15 and https://www.woodworkforums.com/showpo...3&postcount=24.
How do people do those nice links where you just click "here" rather than all the www mumbo above?
I have fitted a couple of things onto my Z axis ... one is an alum tube which keeps my air blower pipe nice and tidy and the other is an acrylic block with my cross hairs laser installed. When I bought the cross hair lasers, I think it was Greg said that you need to buy a few as their focus is problematical ... well I bought 3 tested them all and got one which is in reasonable focus.
Cheers,

Hey Alan,
Machine is looking very nice, especially your z axis. Like the way the air blower is out of the way.
